Stupid questions:

1. could this be a realistic HTPC?

2. Will it run Win7?

Not stupid questions. I too would appreciate someone with better computer knowledge to explain what this offer really is, what it will do, and why I need it.

This unit would make a good htpc; but the atom is very limited in performance, so don't expect to do anything else with it besides surf the net and play back movies. I don't like such a small unit as they can overheat over time. I prefer a slightly larger case. You'll need to get a single stick of notebook ddr3; note the tiny power supply, only 65 watts. It should run windows 7 easily with 4 gb of ram.

Not good for HTPC. This is the same line of hardware found in Asus EeePC. It You could put Windows 7 Starter and run it on at little as 2GB of RAM, and it would probably eek by streaming HD but it would be excruciatingly slow and ill-suited for an HTPC. I've owned an EeePC and would not recommend as anything other than a toy or hobbyist device. For HTPC, look at an AMD Fusion APU (Llano) based system.

This comes with a 60gb SSD. Will make a good HTPC. No dedicated graphics though.

Depends on what you want your HTPC to do. Playing back standard rest stuff would be fine, but I wouldn't exactly expect this to run 1080p well at all, especially high bit-rate blurays or similar. Atom is an abomination that should not exist. Intel has fooled me for the last time. I've had two different gens of the dual core atoms hoping they could be good HTPC boxes and both times I wanted to rip my eyes out waiting and watching glitchy videos.

Not terrible for an HTPC. I have had a couple different models of this computer. I currently have the nt-A3500, which sports the E-350 CPU, and has only slightly better specs than the D2500 in this deal. It is definitely slower than the i7 that's in my laptop, but what do you actually need in an HTPC? It really just needs to be powerful enough to play videos and browse. The SSD definitely helps in this form factor. Just be aware that this deal is Newegg blowing out aging inventory. SSD's are very, VERY quickly dropping in price and increasing in size. A few months ago, a 60gb SSD was the average affordable size, now 120gb's are under $100. And this Atom CPU, the D2500, had been replaced by the D2550, then the D2700 (which is currently being phased out); and now the Atom CPU's are on to the Z series.

You'll need a stick of DDR3 (2gb minimum, 4GB preferred) and an OS to get this up and running. Run Chrome as a browser (IE is WAY too much of a system hog for it) and you'll be ok.

Will this run XBMC live ? Need a box for the bedroom...
Thanks

OOS

Thank you.

Will this play MKV (720p/1080p) ok?

Strictly from performance perspective, it will work fine as HTPC. However, it looks like there are no 64 bit drivers available for Intel GMA 3600. So, you'd be stuck with Win7 32 bit, which is a sub par option.

Anyway, the deal is gone, it is a moot point anyway.
