Thanks for sharing! I have this drive, super fast with USB 3.0, and the auto-backup software is easy to use.

WalMart has 500GB Toshiba portable external HDs with backup software for $59.99 + tax B&M.

the Seagate one is cheaper with coupon.

I can't get the coupon link to work - tried 2 browsers

I am getting two of them. Not the fastest but are excellent value for money!

That's because the OP copied and pasted a post from another site that truncated the long text.

Here's a direct link

Item no. 912286. Limit one per customer. While supplies last.

For some reason when I cut and paste it might of gotten corrupted. I found it on Slickdeals.net.

Ouch...$0.10 per GB.

Know of any 2.5-inch 500 GB SATA USB 3.0 drive out there this low? This one also supports FW800 and Thunderbolt with adapters.

I think it's a fantastic deal, bought four yesterday. Cleared out my region. That said, I need them for work.

Be warned it is on clearance, so Staples stock will vary.

Edit: Use http://sd.site88.net/ to check stock, web site will not work for that on this one.

Is the hard drive removable? Can I use it as an internal HDD in my laptop?
Anybody tried opening or breakin it?

YouTube or Instructibles probably has guides about gently opening up external drives, but keep in mind this general rule of thumb: to pry plastic apart, use a thin, dull, smooth butter knife to prevent gouge marks.

I haven't checked Seagate externals, but apparently for the last few years all their 2.5" externals have all been USB-only, meaning their circuit boards connect directly to USB, without first going through a SATA-USB converter board.

Google: Franc Zabkar or Fzabkar , a guy who knows a lot and has posted in forums about hard drives and electronics

http://forums.seagate.com
http://forum.HDDguru.com
http://www.reepair.net (in Arabic but had English translations, and Google translation seems to work well enough)

Reepair.net once published a guide to converting Seagate or Western Digital 2.5" internal USB-only drives to SATA by bypassing the SATA-USB bridge chip on the drive's circuit board and soldering wires to a SATA data connector. That guide may have originally come from the Vietnamese website that distributed a ton of schematics for laptop and desktop computers.

thanks a ton for the detailed reply. Exactly what i was lookin for
I hope I will be able to use either the seagate (Staples) or WD (WalMart) as an internal drive for my laptop.
FW rocks.

GoFlex drives like this one are SATA.

I was able to open up the enclosure and use it as internal drive on my laptop.
The drive is a bit thick, 12 mm against 9mm original drive; buy it still fit in my laptop.
Installed windows 7 on it.
