I live near Vegas and I would not stay there(Ill admit Im picky about hotels). There are plenty of strip hotels in august for under $40 a night that are cleaner, will give you incentives(free buffet, discount tickets etc). I personally would spend $80 and stay at a 4 or 5 star hotel but I see nothing wrong with an remodeled room at the Excalibur with free buffets for under $30 compared to free at the plaza. Now if I were in my early 20's and going to party free might be fine. Right now with the heat and cost of gas hotels in Vegas are not booked up and offering deals left and right.

I've stayed there a couple of times, it's one of the nicer downtown casino hotels. Golden Nugget>Four Queens/Plaza>Vegas Club/Fritzgerald/California>Gold Spike/Binions

The problem with undisclosed "Resort Fees" is that they are completely fraudulent. If a hotel doesn't show this "fee" on any info or booking screen when making a reservation, it's fraud.
If an undisclosed $10-25 "Resort Fee" is legitimate, an undisclosed $200/night "Resort Fee" is legitimate, too.
I guess the casinos have found the "sweet spot" where people will pay it and not create a huge stink.
This happened to me at the Riviera (was in town for a convention) several years ago. This time, it was an "electricity fee" or something like that. I'm in Vegas for conventions (at the nearby LVCC) regularly. Never even entered the place, since.
I'll have to take a look at the terms and conditions of the "free" deal at the Plaza. Maybe I'll book some "free" nights, then fail to show.

Kinda far from the STRIP. I would pay in the $40-60/night range to stay close or nearby strip.

Actually it is downtown. Rooms fully remodeled last year with NEW fixtures from the failed/bankrupt Fontainebleau Resort.
It is a questionsable part of downtown, right next to Greyhound Bus Depot. But a short Buss ride to the "Strip" resorts.

You guys and your boring strip hotels. "Oh, look at me, I'm in Egypt". meh. "Hey! I'm in a medieval castle". So? Roller coasters... Boooooring! Plaza otoh is a cleverly themed resort that screams danger! The adrenaline rush arrives when walking from the parking lot, past the homeless at the bus station. The excitement that comes from knowing you could catch hepatitis by touching anything in the casino. Seriously, the (cough)Resort fee is not so bad, because it includes free wireless(normally $150 a day), free 800 and local telephone calls, complimentary bottled water, & free parking($5). They just implemented the fee on 7/24.

I don't think Fremont St is sketchy at all, at least the pedestrian part. I will grant you that things fall off pretty quickly once the Fremont Street Experience ends (so I can't recommend staying at the Gold Spike). My gf and I have been staying downtown for 7years and haven't had any problems, we like the dealers more compared to the strip casinos and it doesn't take 15min to walk from casino to casino.
$7 for a 24hr pass on the Duece will get you to the strip in about 30min.

I've heard the rooms in the Cortez are nice for originals (read: small) but I don't think they've renovated in a while. I've been a big fan of Four Queens since they had renovated in 2006ish but I might need to try the Plaza again since they have a pool.

+1, I've been staying at Fremont St many times and never had an issue. I have not stayed at the Plaza but can say that the Golden Nugget is a great place to stay, obviously not free. Having the convenience of being able to hit up around 10 casinos within 5-10 minutes is a major plus, especially if you are a sports bettor where lines sometimes range by 1-2 points just by going across the street. I've been getting offers for the new Plaza and might have to check it out soon.

Just wait until 3 of the 4 elevators are broken and you are trying to get out in the morning. You have to get on an elevator going up or you'll be waiting over an hour or schlepping your bags down a dozen flights of stairs. It's funny seeing the looks on their faces as you stop at every floor and the elevator is completely full.
In this case, "free + $10" isn't worth it.

We always stay downtown when we go--used to always stay at the Nugget, but quite honestly--we spend so little time in our room that it doesn't really matter much Stumble in at any hour of the day or night...sleep a few hours, shower and do it all over again LOL Everything is within walking distance, and we love the variety...free bands on the weekend nights on Fremont, single deck black jack at the Cortez, and great deals on food if you look for the coupon books in each casino (usually by the club sign up windows). As long as you stay within the main area there, police presence is strong and the area is clean. Also--there are NO card snappers there--I'm sure you know which ones I mean LOL We've stayed at the Nugget, the Fitz, and Four Queens--all have been CLEAN-which is my main concern. And, after you sign up for their club, and stay there you get offers for free all the time. If my husband and I put our offers together we could stay downtown for 2 weeks for free at all the different places! Get new offers and coupons every quarter--they always want you back

Just a few minutes walk from the Plaza Hotel & Casino is the Fremont Hotel and Casino and they have a great weekday buffet lunch that tastes good and is very affordably priced at $7.99 per adult. They often run a promotion that when you first sign up for their free gambling card you will get your first buffet free. As a matter of fact they are currently running that deal. Whenever I go to Vegas I always stay on Fremont St. If you want to see the strip, like was mentioned, there is a bus that goes there and back I think about every 15 minutes.

South point and Redrock are two of my favorites, but nothing beats the Silverton for convenience and access to local amenities. Now if you want to get pig drunk, walking around with the unwashed masses and looking for your next anti-biotic inducing encounter, the strip or downtown may be preferred.

I can still remember, during the Great Recession back in 2009, my wife and I were able to stay at the Plaza Hotel and Casino (before the remodel) for only $13 a night (no resort fee at that time either). We had a big room on an upper floor with a view of the Las Vegas Strip in the distant background. Those were the days...
I signed up and I realize it's early, but I never heard back from them yet. I vaguely remember this same offer last year too and me signing up but no one ever calling me. I wonder if this is a real offer? I doubt any of us will hear back from them to be honest with you. Sounds like a scam to me, probably trying to harvest personal information. I probably shouldn't have signed up after all...
