Wow... RAM price just keeps dropping and dropping. Maybe it's about time I upgrade from my 4x2gb setup.

So what to do 16gb at 10666 speed ram or 2 x 4gb for only 8gb at 16000 speed on new Ivy bridge build

Depends on what you are going to be doing with the new rig.

Windows by itself will have a hard time utilizing all that RAM. I have 16GB and rarely use above 6GB, the rest is used for Cached memory.

Where my 16 comes in handy is when I use virtualization, as I can have multiple VM's running at the same time. Also helps a bit while doing video and photo editing.

If you are a gamer, I would recommend you stick with speed over size.

maybe to 2x4GB but otherwise, you shouldn't need more than 8....any higher and it's just unnecessary

put the cash toward a graphics card

I beg to differ if there is any video/photo editing going on. If I have LR and PS going at the same time with RAW files involved I can easily push 100% usage of available RAM.

Thanks, but not a whole lot of photo/video editing for me. My current RAM is faster (DDR3 1600) so I'll probably stick with that for now, but I'm still amazed how cheap it's gotten.

if you're going full on, sure, get some more RAM....but again, a better graphics card would help

for most people, 8GB is plenty

G.Skill has a habit of using either no-name chips for its slowest DDR3 memory (PC10666, sometimes PC12800) and overclocked branded chips for everything faster. An APHnetworks review of another line of a G.Skill PC10666 module showed that it was made of no-name chips, i.e., marked "G.Skill".
