The film was probably shot in 2.35:1 (a typical cinema format). 16:9, of course, is the HDTV standard that was selected (which, IIRC, is half-way b/t 2.35:1 and 4:3). So, it's possible the 1.77:1 format is formatted for an HDTV (just as full-screen DVDs were formatted for 4:3 instead of being presented in the native widescreen, letterboxed format).

For the Bluray, Amazon states it's 1.77:1, but reviews say it's a mistake, and that the one they got was 2.35:1. Maybe the same case here.

Thanks for the info. I wonder why 2012 version is 20 bucks cheaper than the 2011 version though

Does this mean that the second and third movies only have the lower quality sound track?

The WalMart site lists AC, DTS-HD Master Audio, Dolby Digital 5.1

A scan of the UPC barcode and an ISBN search came up empty.

I am saving my set for a present (maybe), so I don't want to open it if I'm going to return it.

I've only watched the first one (this past weekend) and haven't put the other two in yet. It was in standard theatrical letterbox format. I don't have a killer sound system, so, unfortunately, I probably won't notice. Hopefully someone else will look at the expired thread and chime in.
