AMD E-300 is too weak. I am not sure about low-end laptop's quality, but Toshiba's repair service costs $20 shipping if anything happened on it.

A.Grab a Sandy bridge Intel i3 2XXXm laptop from BF's deal. ($300-350...like a normal sale....where is the $350 i5....)
B.Newegg has an Samsung AMD A6 laptop. It's $120 more but I think it worth it. (CPU Performance x2, good screen, bluetooth....Con:no USB 3.0)
C.Find a used Intel Sandy bridge laptop from craigslist($200-250), but YMMV....good luck if you don't know much about pc.

Agreed. Nothing wrong with a budget laptop and not buying more power than you need. But an E-300 is netbook quality, really not up to snuff for anything more than Word Docs and medium resolution Netflix. That extra $50 to $100 really gets you into a different experience.

For ~$300 + tax, I was able to get an Asus X401A at BestBuy with Windows 7. (The last of the Win7 machines, I guess.)
It has a B970 CPU (Sandy Bridge dual-core, 2.3Ghz).
I've noticed something about it though, it's slow.
I don't know if somehow a setting got changed, but according to CPU-Z, it's running at 800Mhz, on battery.
So even though this laptop is a SB, and has a fast advertised speeds, with the default install, it only runs at 800Mhz on battery, and feels just as slow (or slower, due to Intel's crappy on-die IGP) than my Acer Aspire One 722 with C-60 APU.
So you might think that buying a SB Pentium dual-core might be faster, but not really. In order to have similar battery life to the AMD APUs (C-60, E-300), they downclock the SB chips severely when on battery power.
So yes, this is a great deal.

I would rather spend $250 on this lappy and then drop $129 on a 256 gig SSD. You will see that performance shine more than just about anything else.

55% Agree. The 5400 RPM slow everything down. I used to have AMD E-450 pair with 120GB SATA III SSD. It loads everything faster but still slow down when it needs "processing" something. For example, Firefox, fast launch, but laggy when scrolling. The AMD board is not friendly to the SSD I used. First, I got some BSOD issues. This SSD don't have any issues on my two laptops(i7 2670qm and i3 2310m). Second, lots of AMD board still load with old stuffs,like SATA II, no native 3.0. Most people probably won't notice difference between SATA 3 and 2, but I still have better experience with SATA III. Third, I had some AMD Display drive crashes with unknown reason. I don't like HD 3000, but it is still a decent IGP for common folks. I feel A6's GPU is 40% faster when comes to light gaming.
E-300 is not bad. It runs less power than a P4....I just don't want a laptop slow as a P4 because I need to pay $250+ for it
My choice is : CPU SB i3 (or B9XX at least). AMD is A6 (or A4 at least). GPU HD 2000 or better HDD 128 GB SSD($70-90). 64GB is cheaper, but I still suggest 128 GB. 256 GB maybe too much since we can drop $8 on the 320/500 GB HDD.
For brand: My top three: Lenovo, ASUS, Samsung =>Dell, Toshiba =>HP, Acer =>Gateway maybe?....
Acer is good at making low cost laptop, so sometimes I pick Acer over other brands for low-end laptops. Because some named brand don't have any quality when it comes to low-end.

I got an A6 and it's great, will take over as htpc, but slow HDD. Why no SSD lappys? Ba-dang-buh! That would be a discriminator come holidays.
