Worth a shot...I'm thinking you could get a case, psu and ssd for $100 and have a decent htpc...one reviewer says that it can't handle 1080p reliably which I find hard to believe...its more likely he has high bit rate rips and he should have probably toned it down a bit...

I've been running a e-350 Fusion CPU (I believe this is the same thing) for over a year now - and it has played everything I have thrown at it (including 1080p) -all while using under 30watts of complete system power under full load, running 24/7.

I have the E-350 DM1z from HP and it can handle HDTV recordings from my hauppauge cards. If you use the Cyberlink PowerDVD codec HD MPEG files play smoothly.

Tempted but reviews are not inspiring. Maxes out at 16 gigs ram. This could be a good alternative to the AMD based HP Micro server that lots of people are having good success with as ESXi hosts. (Which officially supports only 8 gigs max of RAM)

I'd like to replace my dead Dell Dimension E520 MB (BTX Form Factor) with this (Mini ITX Form Factor), but have some concerns. Like would MB mounting holes match Dell case standoffs? And what about power connector? Do audio & USB connections conform to any standard?
Just from photos, I can see the back plane isn't the same as the Dell (hacksaw needed?). Could this become a big can of worms? Thanks for any expert input.
BTX's have the opposite orientation (not upside down orientation) so the back panel probably wouldn't even line up.
I wouldn't bother, go get a BTX board or start over...

I'm runnning ubuntu 12.10 with a MSI E350 itx. ATI driver fglrx doesn't work well with unity, nor gnome. XBMC is not yet ready. I have upgraded to ubuntu 12.10. ATI fglrx is not working, even after reinstallation. Gnome mplayer can play video, but no audio. VLC can play both, but very slow. But it seems totem works well with the VESA:WRESLER driver. i'm usinng totem to play 1080p at my e350 htpc.
Someone said ATI fglrx works well with Kbuntu. I gonna try it later.

Ya, I read the reviews but most of the people who post the reviews on the egg are schmexperts. Who knows if they actually loaded the AHCI driver during OS install, tried to overclock etc.
Also I got this with the intention of matching up the ram with another set that was $30 a couple of weeks ago for a 16GB machine elswhere.

Yes, this is an excellent choice for good quality HTPC with lowbudget and low power CPU (18Watts). Last summer I built a HTPC with MSI Zcate mini ITX board with 4gb ram, USB ATSC TV tuner & 100gb HD (I have a 2tb NAS with my media) and Wesena ITX6 case and slot in bluray drive. It cost little above $200 (Except Motherboard and case, rest all are from Craigslist). But it is working like champ. I use it for all my media needs (1080P video playing from NAS, Netflix streaming, DVR) and basic browsing.
MicroCenter's current flyer has the same price for this board. I agree no free ram. I will check with them to see if they can match Newegg's RAM add-on. Eventhough they charge tax, MC's 30day returns are less hassle, no restocking fee.

Wow, this is really tempting. I've got a power-sucking HTPC running on 60+ watts that I leave on almost 24/7. It's a quad-core AMD so it's overpowered, but we do use it as a 'desktop' occasionally even though it's hooked up to the tv.

TIA! Usually, the case comes with the PSU. Otherwise, you should be able to get by with less than a nonintegrated mobo + CPU.

Most if not all of those cases are pretty pricey...

They have an all black also but you'll have to look for it.

Edit: Yes, it takes one standard 3.5" HDD and one standard 5.25" DVD/Bluray internal drive.
I have an 80GB Intel SSD in mine (just sitting where the HDD would go, not even screwed in, and then with a DVD-RW.
Edit: It is limited to half-height cards though. Don't plan on using the mic/headphone jacks either. The wiring ends in a non-standard set of connectors, that do no match up with the HD Audio pinout of modern mobos.

You should be comparing this processor with Intel Atom Dual core processor which is the similar line, not the I3. This very low end compared to I3.
