How does Fry's calculate the tax? Do they tax the whole thing first and deduct instant discount later, or do they apply instant discount first and calculate the tax on the remaining. In IL the tax is 10%. In other word would the tax be calculated on $648 or $378?

PC Mag review is for Gen 2 i3. Fry's model has 3rd Generation, which should address some of the performance shortcomings mentioned in the review. Processor comparison.
According to the Fry's rebate form the model number is FPCR47211, which does not seem to be sold in the U.S. Fujitsu's U.S. version of the LH532 is an i5 with 6GB RAM and Win8. You can see specs of the Fry's model FPCR47211 here, and have your browser translate. Specs match what OP posted.
$278 seems way low for a 3rd generation i3 and I'm wondering if Fry's scooped up a boatload that was gathering dust in Eastern Europe.

By the way, I think $58 for 1TB WD is not that a big deal. I bought 750GB Seagate expansion for 39.99 at Target. Target also sales 1TB WD passport for 69.99 (with 2 years warranty).
