WalMart had this wii u skylanders for $75 today. And Amazon has it for $57. good deal.

I guess I'm getting old, but help me understand how critical the additional figures are for the game? It looks like a fun game, but I can't seen spending $5-10 each on all these extra figures. Are they really integrated in the game where you have to buy them to access them?
What does the came compare to?
I've been gaming since Atari, but this is one that just eludes me on why anyone would spend so much on the stuff.
