This program is great even for an amateur photographer. It makes your picture "great" even if you didn't take such a good picture. It's extremely useful if you are working with RAW files since you can really tweak your images.
This price is absolutely amazing for this product.

If you bought (or own) a DSLR, it should be a law to own Lightroom. That is all.

That's a tough one to answer as "amateur" covers a lot of ground. I will say that Lightroom takes a considerable investment of your time to learn. It is made for people that put time and effort into tweaking their photos after they take them. It's made to handle and organize a large amount of photos and also has powerful processing tools that are photoshop-like. I'm taling about adjusting exposure, color, sharpness, etc. Users typically shoot RAW data.
If you prefer to just put the camera on auto and get the pictures into your computer as quickly as possible I would not recommend it. If you're just starting out and don't know what I'm talking about in the previous paragraph, I'd hold off. You've got much to learn before deciding you want/need this software and there's ample free software (probably came with your DSLR) that will serve you well in the meantime.

You do make some good points and I don't disagree, but for $79 I'd recommend just buying it and installing when you feel like learning how to use it. It's powerful software. I only know my way around it and it's already helped me improve my photos (I'm 100% amateur when it comes to photography).

as a professional photographer this brought my workflow down from ~15 hours to ~5 hours in post process.
This program is awesome at 2 things for the amateur: - categorizing your photos - adding custom metadata for search

oh, and im on a PC. apple people probably have those features in iphoto
