I bought this on the 23rd when it was $79.99 with $40 MIR. Seems like a good drive, but does anyone remember if was covered under the Iron Egg Guarantee for an extra $20 off?

It's not now, so probably not. But it's worth complaining! Also, you might be covered by some price protection through your credit card provider.

Same net price of $40 from Amazon or Newegg, right? Except Newegg does not yet collect tacks (sp) in my state. And since tacks is based on list price, Amazon tacks is 16%. Disgusting.

Decent reviews but everyone says there is no upgraded firmware for this, they say its not made by Asus and its a rebranded liteon with no support.
So is it worth buying? I am liking this price so definitely tempted but I think firmware support is kinda a must.

I might get one when it's $40 w/o rebate.

bought this last BF for $49.99 AR ($90 with $40 rebate). decent deal for 1 year after i guess.
Couldn't you crossflash it then and use the newer firmware ?

I'm sorry that this optical drive did not come with a Blu-ray player. Please try this link from CNET to obtain a free Blu-Ray codec so that you’ll be able to playback Blu-Ray discs on your computer: http://download.cnet.com/K-Lite-Codec-Pack-Full/3000-13632_4-642... Also, before you download and install or make changes to your system, please backup all your files and documents. For comparison of K-Lite codec, please visit: http://codecguide.com/klcp_ability_comparison.htm
Using one now for ripping.. working fine.. No luck with blu-ray playback yet however.. even with the above listed codec downloads.

The date on the "Amazon rebate" link says it must be purchased by 11/30. The Newegg rebate link doesn't seem retailer-specific though, so you should be able to use that if you bought it on Amazon.
Just installed this today and got the rebate info together to mail it out. Don't have any BR disks to burn on though, gonna need to find a deal on some.
What is the preferred brand of writable BR disks? I have always used Verbatim for my DVD media and they have treated me well.
Not familiar at all with BR discs, are there good and bad ones like DVDs or are they all pretty much the same quality? Need to buy a spindle so I can start backup up photos and videos to them.

not to revive a thread, but—this deal was going on amz for the same price until it jumped earlier tonight, maybe i'll go back down before the rebate expires..
also, anyone have luck with the crossflashing to a lite-on? the instructions i was attempting to piece together from myce weren't terribly helpful, heh. mostly i just wanted to be able to bitset on dvd+r again. :X
