Received a Happy New Year email from Best Buy including an offer for a $5 gift card with a small device trade in. Here is the fine print:
"Small device means any product in the following categories: laptops, tablets/eReaders, mobile phones, MP3, gaming hardware (console & handheld), DSLR, digital point & shoot, and digital camcorder. Not all products are eligible for trade-in. Not available in all locations. Trade-in value may vary. Condition, documentation and accessories may affect value. Payment is by Best Buy gift card. You are responsible for removing any data from your product before providing the product for evaluation. You will be required to agree to the terms & conditions. The Best Buy trade-in programs are intended for private, non-commercial use. No dealers. Limit of 3 trade-in transactions per person per day. Best Buy reserves the right to refuse any trade-in for any reason. Learn more about other products accepted for trade-in and see how much they're worth at BestBuy.com/tradein. In store only. Not available in all stores. See a Customer Specialist or BestBuy.com/TradeIn for details. Offer valid through January 19, 2013."
If other FWers are borderline hoarders like me, you may have something to trade in. I have some really old mobile phones that may now be worth $5 each......

Highly doubt they're going to give you anything for a phone older than a couple of years old.

Yep, they take anything electronic that's otherwise considered hazardous waste.

They may take anything and recycle it for you but they only give you giftcards if the product has some value, you can look online to see the value. www.bestbuy.com/tradein

I can eBay the items for much more than bby is willing to give me. I guess it's ok for those who don't want the "hastle" of doing it themselves though.

If old mobile phones will get $5 GCs, BB here I come. I received the same email but it isn't clear if the item has to be something they would normally buy and this is a $5 minimum/bonus or if it is $5 for anything. I am assuming the former but would appreciate anyone's confirmation after they try.

Best Buy uses our Dealtree trade-in site calculator for their trade-in program. We reinburse participating reatailer 80% of the value the trade-in claculator provides. If your item is not in our calculator BB is not going to give you anything for it. You can still trade-in the item but you will not receive any compensation for it. BTW all non-smartphone cell phones are excluded from our consumer compensated recycling buy-back programs so unless you have a smartphone to trade-in save yourself a trip.

Got the same email as the OP. It does seem unclear what items will provide a credit, especially with the disclaimer that they can refuse to accept any item at their discretion.

ANYONE actually try this?? did you just bring in the email and were you able to get 3 x $5 gift cards?
I dropped off my old cellphones yesterday (non-smartphones) that had been sitting around the house for years. This morning, I get this email, which does not make it very clear to me -- would I really get $5/item that I dropped off? Oh well, starting off the New Year with less clutter...Priceless!
Happy New Year 2013!

The email is very misleading, you might need a box full to get a $5.00 GC, my mint box Angel season 4 is worth $1.75, last action Hero $0.36, my cell phone...nothing. My local pawnshop pays better and gives cash.
Ok, since I live 3 miles from a participating Best Buy...I have two cellphones ,1 LG, 1 Nokia and 1 mp3 player. All non functioning. Will I get a GC? On my way........

Taken from another site: Just got back from Best Buy - Successfully "traded" 2x junker cell phones (old flip phones) and 1 broken point and shoot Canon (no chargers, etc). The trade-in value of these came up as $0, and they go into the recycle program AND then you get the $5 gift card for each. The critical part to understand is that they will say trade in value is $0, which is when I started to argue, but then he clarified that the $5 is triggered going into recycle program. I got my $15 GC and less junk around the house.
They were not familiar with the offer, but I took the printed e-mail and once they read it, no problem.

Ok, I'm back, yes I got my $5 GC. If you have old dead phones..go. They didn't accept my mp3 player because it didn't have a name on it. Everything they accept has to be in Best Buys database. Yep, a copy of the email is helpful, it added 15 minutes to my wait without it.

I guess it should also be pointed out this offer and the www.bestbuy.com/tradein offer is not the same thing. This offer is a $5 GC per small device accepted. The other is you get nothing or a small fraction of the value of the item accepted. Be sure they understand which one you're there for.
Good thing I kept a bunch of broken ipod shuffles and crummy $10 (when new) cell phones.
