Has been a red herring issue for years, energy reductions were mandated several years ago. It's rarely even a 10$ difference between like sizes over an entire year if you use it 8hrs every day.

I got the Costco Panasonic U54 black friday deal and the energy use is $21/year. Other LED models of the same size were around $15 to $17. These figures are based on 8hours use/day. So yea, I don't think the energy use issue is that big a deal or difference.

Back on topic - this seems like a pretty good deal. $750 for a bigger version of the $500 50" Costco/Sam's plasma that was available for Black Friday, only +5 inches and with 3D?

Awesome image performance. However, there is no anti-glare filter. If you put this in a room where you can't control the light well, you'll get mirror-like glare.
I have the 60" version and it's awesome. I was concerned about the glare since my living room has lots of windows. In my case the glare isn't any worse that the 65" rear projection that it replaced and it's only for a couple of hours a day when I'm typically not watching tv. If glare is a worry for you, the gt and vt series have filters but at a heck of a premium. Or you could just install some blackout drapes.
Really tempted on this if only to upgrade in size from my LG 50PA6500 (which Iam happy with) . Costco's return policy an added warranty is also making things more tempting (and free shipping does not hurt either) .

Great price eitherway you look at it . GREEN! The main reason I didn't get Polishdreamers 50" Panasonic deal was having to drive an hour+ ea way to the store, wrangle it into the house, etc. Free shipping on something like this is really appealing.
this is a great TV. I have one and I only watch TV at night in a dim room so the PQ is excellent. You can't get better PQ for the price. The energy rating is for "standard mode" which is too dim. Once you calibrate the TV in Cinema or Custom mode then energy consumption will roughly double. It is the price to pay with Plasmas, however, you get deep blacks with detail and colors pop. Let's face it if you buy a 55" TV, then a few extra bucks a month is small sacrifice for great PQ.
If you plan to watch TV in a bright room then avoid or upgrade to ST50.
Consumer report shows plasma Panasonic Viera TC-L55WT50 uses AVG. energy cost of $48/year vs. LED Panasonic Viera TC-P55ST50 energy cost of $16/year, that's three times as much, how did the previous post get their energy cost info from saying minimal difference?

Interesting, I'm going by the energy guide sticker on the TV. That said, from what I understand, the energy usage can vary significantly depending on the TV picture settings that are set by the user.
A 3x cost to run a plasma vs LCD is about right. I ran a killowatt inline with a 50in panny and got about 500 watt consumption, and a 46 LCD was 130-150.
Good Question. Here is a comparison of dimensions of the 55UT50 with 55E50 (Panasonic LED TV) - just picked a random LED tv for comparison. courtesy Panasonic.com

Got one of these for the Superbowl. AVS thread on the Panny U Plasmas Love it! Deepest blacks I've ever seen and the 3D performance is great too. Don't get the Panny 3D glasses. Samsung had them for under $20 and they work fine with the Panny.
Got one yesterday from costco. its $100 off i.e 699 + no tax where I am from, B&M only. shows up as $750 online and free shipping. tried to talk to the online guys to PM with their own B&M, but surprisingly they dont. a great deal for the price.
I ordered the 55" LG LED 55LM4600 with this deal and have delayed delivery...any comments on which TV you would choose? I do have a decent amount of light in the room so I am a bit concerned about glare, but I am thinking right now that the $200-ish dollars extra this will end up being is probably worth it given I don't have to find something at Sears for $300 that I want to buy with rewards points. Thoughts?
rockymast said: I called three costco in my area and none of said its $599, its $699 after $100 instant coupon so at least not in Texas I believe. If there is a link for $599 then we can argue to match the price.

I upgraded my rear projection to a GT50 because of glare, so if this UT50 is not better or not worst in the glare department, then this is not a good replacement if glare is a reason for the upgrade.

I've got both and the LG will be going back for a few reasons... 1) passive 3d, although very nice and glasses are cheap I've had problems with the 3d playback. 2) the glare with the LG is very strong, with big rainbow starbursts which are hard to ignore. 3) price is now the same (got the 4600 at $699), although glasses will set you back another $80 for 4 if you go with the inexpensive samsung 4100 series 4) Panny has less glare, a great picture and is a "smart" TV.
