I saw this on sale (via Appsales app) since yesterday evening. Tasker is an Android automation app.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.dinglisch.andr...

I regularly use LLama since its free and does all the things I want out of my Nexus 4 and Nexus 7 and a few other Android devices scattered around.

I'm trying out Tasker. So far the basic tasks seem to work well, but I'm sure it has a lot of advance features that can be intimidating and overwhelming.

thanks OP, had my eyes on this app for long time. for 2$ didn't want to pass.

Great app, if you're smart enough to figure out how to use it

Do you find that LLama sucks up your battery? I tried using the and my battery life went into the tank...

Had never heard of tasker. Sounds awesome though. Thanks!

Ended up purchasing my first app!!

There is a nice wiki here with lots of profiles to try:

Tasker Wiki

Thanks!

PS - erobot is similar to tasker and free... I personally do not use it, so check it out for yourself.

Also a happy Llama user. Tasker is a great app though and this is a great price.

Nice find OP, I'm in!

I see this will block calls. I haven't found a good call blocker that will block calls I set to block and use a different ringer for calls not in my contact list. I used to have one in my our Palm days. Any recommendation or will tasker do the trick.

Thanks OP. Always looked good, but not worth $6 to me.

Finally a price I can love!

I am not even smart enough to understand the language you guys are using here let alone what is the purpose of this app. Maybe it is too early for me to understand what I am reading but, I am guessing I am in the wrong league here. Some kind of soft-programming? Bye guys.

I don't have tasker, yet. Might bite and buy it, haven't decided yet. Per the Tasker Wiki Blocking Calls section, there are instructions there that "will setup Tasker to screen incoming calls. Those that aren't in my favorites list, will get one ring before they are shuttled off to my voicemail." Not sure if there is a way to supress that one ring or not, maybe more experienced folks can comment.

I've eyed this up for quite some time. I have tried all of the others and I know this one is what I want...but for the 5 or 6 things I wanted, $6.50 was too steep. However, for $2, I'm in!!!

I'm a programmer myself, so look for some very complex tasks in the future! The first I have to have is simple:
Turn apps (directions/maps app & Spotify) when bluetooth is paired with my head unit

I purchased this but after playing for 2 days with it cannot find anything useful to get it working. I know it will take me some more time and i am ok with that. What are some useful tricks you guys have done with this?

The only thing I have found was this one from the wiki. It turns wifi on when I'm in my house and turns it off when I leave.

Wifi automator

I also created one myself to turn the phone to vibrate on Sundays between 10am and 11:30am for church.

I've used Start the Day with a Particular Application Probably will also do Fullsilentmode and auto-enable GPS navigation for a start. Has a lot of potential to automatically control radio (bluetooth, GPS, WiFi) stae, keeping them off when not needed and on when needed, to help increase battery life.

Llama is a bit easier to use because it already comes with predefined profiles, settings and tasks. Tasker basically comes with a blank page and you need spend some time to learn the groove. I've been using Tasker for 2 days also and its seems very powerful and overwhelming with a lot of plugins.

Here are some ideas for some simple tasks that both Llama and Tasker will do easily:

- when Google Map is opened, auto turn on GPS / when Google Map is closed or in background, auto turn off GPS
- auto turn-ON WiFi when specified app is open / auto turn-OFF WiFi when specified app is background or closed. This works great when WiFi is set to OFF at night and you want to take a quick peak at email or browser without having to manually turn back WiFi on and off.
- at specified time period, ie 10 pm - 6 am, turn WiFi off - works great with above
- at specified time period, turn WiFi on
- at home (or specified location), turn WiFi On, set ring volume to 5, set display brightness etc... / upon leaving home, turn WiFi Off, set ring volume to max and vibrate, display brightness to 50, etc...

Some of those can be lumped together into one profile but Llama and Tasker do it differently with the same outcome. I've used Llama for a while so setting up basic profiles and tasks in Tasker isn't too hard.

Tasker has tons of information online, including its own wiki and Google forum. As usual, I look to XDA forums for answers. There are a lot of them (just search "tasker XDA on Google)but here's just one example on XDA

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1110775

A few ideas:

- go to silent mode at work, doctors office, hospital; set back to normal when leaving those areas
- send WakeOnLan packet to your home PC when you get up in the morning, or come home from work [use a third party app to send the WoL packet]
- start a particular app when the headphone jack in plugged in [examples in the wiki]
- GPS on with Navigation on
- turn BlueTooth on when a particular app starts (I use this for Torque)

Thanks OP.. This is a great app

For just turning on WI FI in certain areas and turning it off elsewhere, the app "Smart WIFI Toggler" works magically! It's so easy to do that at first, I didn't even think it was working.

All I had to do was install and enable it, then turn on the wifi when I was home once or maybe twice and ever since then, it just magically turns it on itself when I get home and off when I leave.

And it's free, which, as a Fatwallet user, appeals to me.

FYI, you can make your own APK file with Tasker App factory and then transfer it to other phones and install it without having tasker.
