In my town (north of Chicago), we have Sam's Club and Lowes close by. Sam's Club sells the highly rated ProForce commerical grade concentrated carpet cleaner (1 gal) for around $7. It is equivalent to the $20 solution normally sold with rental machines. The undiluted-50/50 dilution of the ProForce cleaner also can be used to remove stubborn spots.
Lowes rents the Bissell Big Green machine. I've used this and the RugDoctor units and in my opinion, the Lowes unit does a nicer job. Bissell now has a $5 off coupon for a 24 h rental from Lowes which normally costs about $22.

from the Sams Club description for this cleaner
When you need a powerful yet economical, commercial-grade carpet cleaner, look to ProForce Carpet Cleaner. It doesn't hide stains; it lifts and removes them as the built-in odor counteractants eliminate embedded smells. The low alkalinity formula eliminates the need for a neutralizing rinse, and the special surfactant blend is designed to prevent re-soiling. ProForce Carpet Cleaner is compatible with most commercial truck-mount units, home and rental cleaning machines.

my local Lowes still uses rugdoctor equipment. I'm guessing that it varies by area/store.
Back breaking work and hassle to save a few bucks?? Id find a guy with a truckmount CC machine and pay to have it done for me. Results will usually be better its easier and ... wait ... forgot who im talking to here ... the fatwallet crowd.
