When was this ever $129? I've been watching these units for quite a while and don't remember them being that expensive. Aren't these just Chinese junk anyway?

It is, you can't read anything on those. Terrible quality, night recording is non-existent.

It looks like one of the many knockoffs of the DVR207; same outer body, different internals. Both are made in China but a genuine 207 has good night vision and great daytime video. Plate readability is fine although very short range at night; the biggest problem I've encountered is I would prefer a wider field of view. I'm guessing from the price that this is nowhere as good.

EDIT: If you follow that Amazon link you can see a comparison between a knockoff and genuine 027 (the older model of the 207.)

Can someone fill he in on what this device is used for and how it works? I've never heard it it before.

It is placed in the car to continuously record your driving. The recording can be very precious with insurance claim or fighting ticket.

A lot of these have dual-cameras, which record both inside and outside. Some has GPS tag, which can show your location on Google map.

Google "Russian driving video" and you'll see why they are extremely popular in other parts of the world already. I expect them to be more commonplace here in the future too, as drivers get more crazy and accident costs go up. It's cheap insurance if you're in the right.

Yup, having your own evidence could prove invaluable in this age where others are watching your every move and you could be penalized for something you didn't do.
