I like this phone, but once I got used to Swype, I stopped using the keyboard.

Pros -
Keyboard typing is better then thumb peck.

Cons -
Can't find a case to fit it properly. It's too thick.
Camera button getting hit too often
Miserable battery life.

Price is down to $19.99. Limit 3 per customer. In for 3.

Worst case scenario I'll use these as mini-tablets, media players, or offline GPS navigation units running Navfree USA.

I like a decent physical keyboard even when I'm good at an on-screen keyboard. Tiny OSK and tiny physical are both awful on my Virgin Mobile Venture. This should be way better for both!

can these be flashed to pageplus?

can we use it just for android apps without buying any plan from Virgin Mobile?

Does this have GPS for ofline use?

evanm said:   can these be flashed to pageplus?
I think you can only use Verizon contract type phones on page plus, I think,,,, not 100% sure
but someone will correct me if I am wrong.

I have this phone.

Yes - you can use GPS without activation.  The speaker is pretty weak for voice directions unfortunately.

One major drawback - the camera cannot autofocus! So all the barcode/QR code/Online check deposit apps will NOT work.

Virgin Mobile is one of the hardest to flash as they tend to Brick when you try or are locked down.

In for 3

does it take a sim card as well? Are they locked outside the U.S. or do they work like the major carriers where they're only locked in the U.S.?

if it does might make a nice option for intl travel.

Most likely.

I was the first one to root the Virgin Mobile Venture and it was moderately locked down. However, there are now ROMs and a CWM recovery for it. This thread appears to have good information for rooting the Virgin Mobile Kyocera Rise:

I expected not, but I just checked here:
http://www.gsmarena.com/kyocera_rise_c5155-4747.php
which says it has a mini-SIM. No GSM, just CDMA, so I'm not sure how that works or what the point is...I'm not very educated on CDMA SIMs.

Yes, we have this phone, bought it from Target. No plan or activation, loaded apps and use it for free wifi access.

Wow - I was just going to use this as a spare Android device, but I have never seen reviews that bad!

Look thru the reviews before buying. Many were DOA. Most were dead shortly after arrival...

Many thanks to the OP and contributing posters. It never occurred to me that one could use a phone without a plan on Wifi in a tablet like capacity. Picked one up for my teen to use for his smart phone controlled Christmas gift! The $10 Holiday cash is given on gift card purchases too, picked one up for the stocking for all his 'nerd' projects, lol!

ZTE AWE is much better

Appears to have Bluetooth as well. Might make a nice hacked TV/HTPC remote, or a dedicated phone for running Torque app in your car.

The Kyocera Rise can connect with other devices via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth™ 2.1, and a USB cable.

See the Kyocera Rise user manual at http://www.virginmobileusa.com/resources/phones/prepaid/manual/V...

Target had piles of $20 AWE's available.
Bought one and it's a great smartphone.

Yeah...that was BF. How much is it now?? The ZTE Awe is def better, but what's the point of bringing it up if you can't get it for $20 anymore?

Sometimes perspective is helpful...I personally like to know if there are better alternatives to purchases that have been or will be available.

in for 3. I bought a couple earlier this year from Target also the $20 deal. It's great. I use it as an Ipod Touch kind of device for music, browsing and everything an Android phone does. Can even use voice over IP to make and receive calls.

AAA++++

Also good phone for some porn storage lol

Use one of those little powered speakers, the kind that are 1.5" or so around and 2 inches high.

can you use this on the Grandfathered $25 plan?

  The box indicates

Beyond Talk Plan only

$35 $45 or $55 a month

For those of you asking about the ZTE Awe, check eBay.
Looks like so many people bought them on Black Friday
to re-sell them on eBay, thus flooding the market.

Many of them are not selling for much, if at all!

  same price in store?

  Same question here. Thanks!

I just checked. Looks like the going rate is $45.

Website doesn't indicate or even imply that it even exists in the store, let alone what the price might be. Maybe someone who knows RS better can comment.

The difference between a phone and a tablet is size and cell service. Some tablets offer cell service; the difference for those is just size.

I like GrooveIP, but Talkatone is even better. I've been using it on a never-activated phone to make calls while on wifi. Unfortunately both will stop working in a few months. Google is going to discontinue the protocol that they use. Supposedly the Google Hangouts app will offer the same functionality. I'm skeptical.

I hope how to do it is on youtube.

You won't need Youtube. Using a phone without service to run apps is just like using a phone with service to run apps, you just aren't paying and don't have service. The apps are on the phone itself. The default Google Maps/Navigation app requires internet connectivity to work, so it won't work without mobile data. (Actually you can make it cache maps but I think it still can't create routes without internet, so all you could do is see the map and where you are.) Instead you use an alternative navigation app that downloads its maps. "Navfree USA" is the only one I found that is free and can navigate to an address; others can only get you to a street and aren't good at searching for that street.

And no plan?
Tell me how, please.

1. Sign up for a free Google Voice account and phone number at http://voice.google.com
2. Install Android app named Talkatone or Groove IP (both are good).
3. Put your Google username/password into the app and use the app to make calls. The app will also ring when a call is received.

No.

*The following smartphones launched before May 1, 2012 and are therefore not subject to the new device upgrade rules at this time: VentureTM, LG ® OptimusTM Slider, HTC ® Wildfire STM, Motorola TriumphTM, LG ® Optimus VTM, Blackberry ® CurveTM 8530.

If you're looking for a phone like this that can work on the grandfathered plan, look at the Optimus Slider.

Two stores near me have them showing up as "in stock" -- anyone know if they'd honor the online "in basket" prices?  I'd think this could maybe be an mp3 player, use with Talkatone etc, I'm in if the stores still honor that price

And maybe obvious for some, but the key to making those calls and texts without a plan is that you must have access to a wifi signal.

FYI - my order for 3 of them was cancelled last night..
