Is there a benefit to the Chromecast as compared to Android sticks? I understand that the Android sticks run about twice the price but does Chromecast work as merely a streaming device from another computer/tablet/phone or can it turn you TV into a computer with an on board operating system like the Android sticks?

It can't turn your TV into a computer, but you can mirror tabs from your Chrome browser and play media from approved apps.

Same price at Best Buy right now.

I have it but I don't use it too often since the apps that can do Chromecast are very limited. So check if the apps you plan to use are able to Chromecast before buying this device.

Plex, Hulu+, and YouTube are the main iOS apps I use with Chromecast. Not sure if there is a porncast app yet. Seems like there is a market for it.

The apps that are chromecast compatible having been coming fast and furious the past couple of weeks (since google opened up the SDK). Its no longer limited at all. Just about all the the major players have chromecast ready apps now. Not to mention the indie devs doing all sorts of crazy stuff with it.

For media, get the localcast app for Android. It rocks.

Better to get the Roku Stick for $15 more. Has many more apps to choose from. Many complain about the poor quality when mirroring through Chromecast.

Can R0ku mirror at all?

The optimal way to use Chromecast is through smartphone apps. Mirroring is convenient but always results in quality loss.

I recently jumped on the plex bandwagon this week with a 4 year old desktop I had laying around. Windows media center, plex(and the HD surfer wave plugin too), HD homerun prime, and chromecast is a wonderful combination.

Throw in Netflix, hulu+, google play vide, and Vudu and you have all of my media being castable. I really wish Amazon weren't jerks about prime video. I understand their business logic but hate it.

Good deal OP and the person who pointed out BB is the same.

How the sound and video quality when you mirror to tv? thanks

Mirroring sounds great in theory, but the quality has never been sufficient for me to use it. I use Chromecast for HBO Go because "my" cable provider doesn't grant access through Roku but does through Chromecast. I also use it for Google Play movies. Recently when deciding where to buy movies for the kids to watch multiple times (Toy Story, Nemo, etc) I've been leaning towards Google Play b/c I can download it to one of their cheap tablets for long car trips, airplane rides, etc.

Mirroring works great if you tune your internal network, which takes some time and effort with measuring ping times and trying out different WiFi router locations. Placement of the WiFi router is quite important. I've had friends come over and ask if they could borrow the blu-ray I was playing - when it was playing over Chromecast. I use a Plex media server and use the Plex app to cast media stored on my computer.
