If you still don't have a DVR and don't like rebates (latest DVRs are $100 with $100 rebate), you can get a refurbished 35hr Tivo for $15. This is likely not one of R10 units (there were never 35hr variants of those units) so this should be fully hackable for multi room viewing and the rest of the Home Media package.
CLICK HERE Or try this link https://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/hw/Signin.jsp?_requestid=13636 Simply hit the above link, log in to your DirecTV account and order your Tivo.

To access the Tivo deal you must first sign in on the directtv website then click on the "My Direct TV" link on the upper left hand of the page. Then under the "My equipment window" click on "Add or replace receiver" link. Then type in DVR4ME in the offer code box on the right hand side.It will then show the refurb Tivo with dual tuner offer for only $14.95.
But that wouldn't be worth $15 just for the hard drive.
And someone enlighten me, how much extra does it cost to use a Tivo with DirecTV service? My dad has DirecTV, but no Tivo, is it like $10 a month to use or...?

Let me add, the $5.99 for Tivo service is a single charge, no matter how many TiVos you have, but there is still a $4.99(?) extra receiver charge for every additional box, so three TiVos = $5.99+2(extra boxes)x4.99
lzpoof said: hmm so if nothing else you could scrap the thing and get a 35-40GB hard drive out of the deal.
And a two year commitment..
And if you don't activate it, a $150-$200 fee ?

This is a great deal for people who have direct TV, have one Tivo box already and have more a 2nd tv on a non-Tivo box.
You can have this hooked up for free and remove your old equiptment from service so no extra per TV charge because your just swapping that equiptment. (you can keep the old box for no charge if you want it)
No extra charge for Tivo service because you pay extra for the Tivo service per account not per TV.
No contract extention required... none..
Total cost $14.99 and about $1.00 tax (for me) and no extra monthly charge
Ok all I just ordered one.. This is my first of and kind of DVR type of equipment.. So can some of the Tivo gurus inlighten me, I have heard that you can hook this up and hack it so you can watch in other rooms wirelessly..

Use The Zipper to hack the unit. It works really well. The best thing you can do is read and start to learn what you need to do. It's relatively painless if you do your homework.

just ordered one, this is great i was looking for one of the old directv Tivo units, not the new dvr+ its strange that you couldnt get it delivered without installation though, since i already have everything wired for it.
Don't forget you must have 2 sat drops for you to be able to record two shows at one time while watching another. If your replacing a non-Tivo box it only has one cable coming from dish. You can not use a splitter at all. Most new dishes have at least 4 cable drops off of it. These Tivo boxes will work somewhat with one line. You need two comming from the dish to use all the features.

I already have a Tivo in my living room. Tivo basic for free. I want to get this for my bedroom, what are my options? Will I be able to pay the 5.99 a month for this Direct Tivo and use the subscription for my living room Tivo unit?

If the installer does it, you will likely get the everything you need for free! Yes, you need dual LNB for it to work dual tuner..

No, Tivo and DTV are two separate things. You will pay the $5.99 a month for the Tivo service from DTV. If you make this an additional receiver, there is a $5 receiver mirroring fee.
I'm in for one of these, BTW. I have two of these in my house now, getting this one to keep as a spare (power supply and remote). If something happens down the road, I don't want one of the new units that isn't Tivo-based. And I also don't want to get involved in the new lease program in March. Not having any committment is a big plus, though I've had DTV for many years now and don't plan on leaving.
You can also buy a multi switch that will split your one wire coming into your house into the two you will need for Multi Show recording. They are about $40 at bb and are a quick alternative to running a second cable.

I think you need two lines coming into the house to take full advantage of dual tuners and a multiswitch. You have to split both lines and send both to each location you want to use dual tuners. The problem with splitting just one line coming from a dish is that it's unidirectional. DirecTV channels have one of two polarizations. The receiver requests one direction or the other from the dish. Each line coming from an LNB can be either one direction or the other (I think it's clockwise or counter-clockwise), but not both. As long as both channels you wanted to watch/record were of the same polarity, you'd be fine with a single line from the dish, but once you want the ability to watch all the channels at any time, you cannot do this. Therefore you must have two lines coming in from your dish. You can split them with a multiswitch, which basically splits both your A and B signals and sends one of each to each location for you. I had to do this recently.

You definitely don't need to have an installer come out (although, if youd do, they'll give you the multiswitch for free). The units are shipped (usually Fedex).

ok, i'm about to get on this deal but i have a question for you guys. I have direct TV without DVR. I currently have 2 recievers in my house. My recievers have 2 lines coming from them and no empty slots for additional recievers. My question is, if I get Tivo, would I be able to use all the features that it has (i.e. recording one program while watching another program, etc.) and still be able to regular direct tv TV on both my sets in my house?

Sorry for being a newbie
So how much cost per month to have 1 of this? This would be my first Tivo and is for directv. I used to have replayTV, and they have a lifetime sub. Does Tivo have lifetime sub? Thanks!

Nice find OP. Already have 2 DVR's through them, but for only $15 I guess I'll now have 3 .
Op.. You need to mention that you must sign up for the $5.99 monthly fee, and a contract. This is an IMPORTANT part of this "Deal"

There isn't any additional contract per the terms. I also double checked before ordering when I called asking about what model they might be sending me.
Terms:
"You are not obligated to continue your subscription to DIRECTV programming for any specific duration."
Yes, you do need to pay the $5.99 month DVR fee if you don't already have one. If you do have one or more already, then there isn't any extra monthly fees involved.

If I understand you correctly. You have 2 receivers in the house and each receiver has a single line from the dish. Yes, you can hook up a single feed into direcTivo and still have it work. With a single feed, you can watch a PRE-RECORDED program while DTivo records another show. You CAN NOT watch a LIVE SHOW while recording something off another channel. For that to work, you need 2 lines feeding into your DTivo. EDIT: no matter how many feeds you have, you can still do the rewind/forward/pause/instant-replay with Tivo. Trust me, you want the dual tuners.
Aren't these on the short list for replacement? I've got two DTV Tivo units now, and I'd buy a spare, but with the announcement of the DTV/Sky in-house DVR, I think the writing is on the wall for these things...
I'm waiting for a push from DTV for HD... anyone have any timeframe on that? They puut the sats up last year, but it's been more quiet than I would have thought on the HD front from DTV.

i was reading the terms and conditions and all it said was to activate within 30 days and pay $5.99/month. it didn't say anything about length of contract or anything like that. so hypothetically, you can sign up, activate the reciever and keep it for 3 months and then tell direct tv that you don't want dvr any more, right? tell me if i'm misread something.
"Terms and Conditions
By placing this order you agree to the following terms and conditions:
Offer for existing residential customers only with accounts in good standing, as determined by DIRECTV in its sole discretion.

Land-based phone line connection required. Professional installation highly recommended.
DIRECTV PROGRAMMING AND PRICING SUBJECT TO CHANGE AT ANY TIME. Fee for separate programming on second and each additional TV $4.99.mo. You are not obligated to continue your subscription to DIRECTV programming for any specific duration. im wondering if i can just call and have the installation cancelled. since its replacing an existing unit, all i need to do is run 1 more coax off my multiswitch, dont really need an installer screwing with my setup.

Then what are you going to do with the DVR? The DVR only works with DirecTV (it doesn't have an encoder so it won't work with normal TV signals). And it won't work without DTV activation either.

I asked him where he was and if it was noted as a Tivo install, he said his workorder had nothing about a Basic Install for Tivo, it merely said an outlet install. He then let me know that if the install involved a wallfish, it would be 75 bucks. I told the guy to cancel the appt and that I would call DTV back and reschedule for a basic Tivo installation (dont care if I get an extra one or not)...I am not paying 75 bucks for a wallfish when what I bought comes with Basic install for free.
Oh well, at least the Tivo I received via mail is up and working fine on 1 SAT in at the moment.
Basic install does not include wall fish. $75 for wall fish is about right. Basic install will include drilling a <if I don't add this text FW complains> hole in the wall and a straight run up to 150'. But if it's actually fishing (ie from 1st floor to 2nd floor or basement up or attic down, that's not included...
Just received the same info from DTV themselves...I will be going up in my attic and doing the fish myself, only thing the guy will have to do is attach to the wallplate and connect the third line outside to the multi. Just going to use the line from my son's room since he doesnt use it himself.
I thought I had read somewhere in this thread that another person had been told the wallfish was extra, only to call DTV and have them send someone out and do it included with the basic install...oh well...
Thanks...
EDIT: Doah, that post did not involve a wallfish, but a run into a basement...which apparently is still included in the basic install.
