Overstock has it $454.99-15% coupon+$2.95 shipping=$389.69-$15.56(%4 FatCash)=$374.13

I know that there is a thread for overstock 15%, however I guess that this is a good deal worthy a seperated thread.

I got it the last week with 10% coupon.

It is coming with nikon box marked as reconditioned. so I guess it is directly form nikon. Not grey box refurbished item.

Coming with all accessories, and three monthes warranties.

this body only deal is good for people hate the kit lens. I recommend the lens : Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 lens . This lens now has $30 rebate from tamron. Google this lens, you will be happy with the good reviews all over the world.

Enjoy,

Nikon D50 link

By the way, 15% off link is in the quick links below

Search the Tamrom lens in pricegrabber.com, the cheapest is about $320 after rebate. This Tamron lens with 6 years warranty.

I can't get the FatCash discount to apply.

Get on eBay and bid. I got D50 with two lens for somewhat over 600. Mint condition and am very satisfied with it.

ssih said: I can't get the FatCash discount to apply.

click "stores", and then "overstock",and then 15% link that place. and FatCash will apply in that link.

Be aware that if you get a 28-75mm lens, you will have no wide angle capability (which the range in which most people shoot most shots, especially indoors). This is due to the 1.6 crop factor, making the lens equivalent to a 45-120mm lens for a 35mm film camera.

You still have the alternative of picking up either the kit lens, or something similar, on eBay.

EDIT: onlycom (3 posts down) has corrected my wildly inaccurate calculations. It's really 42-112.5mm. Man, that was just completely "wrong info" I was giving out.

Still, OP has posted a great deal on a great camera.

I just bought this yesterday, didn't opt to get the 2 year platinum protection plan,

Waiting for my 18-200mm VR lens to come in.

Sure, the tamron lens is not best, however for the price, one can not ask for more.

By the way, do not touch nikon DX lens. I think the whole format 135 camera will become afforable in three years. So, Never regret to invest in whole format lens.

wrong info here.

Nikon D50's FOV crop factor is 1.5x

thus 28-75mm equals to 42-112.5mm.

while it is generally true that people use some wide angle side, you cannot strictly assume that most people shoot in wide angle. besides, with DSLR, you probably need more than one lens to cover your shooting needs.

heh great deal on this camera, I was gonna post this last night, but forgot. Too bad I lack the funds for this

Know that you are getting a refurbished product tho, and with nikons average shutter life being 50k shots, you camera may show up with a shutter that will need to be replaced soon.

I can answer any questions about this camera.

My lens:I have a sigma 18 - 125mm lens
and a quantarry 30 - 300 mm /macro ELO

Just so people know, the kit lens on the d50 is a piece of crap and should be avoided.
Manually focusing this lens is akward, not only because the range of motion is small - making it difficult to do small adjustments - but the lens will focus "past infinity" quite a bit (like 20%). Also, if you "bump" the camera (even very) gently, the manual focus will get "bumped" out of position - fireworks exploding overhead will mess up your manual focus. D50 does have some issues with auto focusing at night at the stars, moon, etc.

IR Remotes are cheap for the d50 ($18), but overstock doesn't have any.
Oh, get screen protectors for the lcd (get some pda ones and cut to fit) the back doesn't scratch easily, but you can scratch it. Kind of surprised that Nikon didn't put in a bevel or something to protect it.

Also, (just a FYI/do you know how lucky you are) a d50 kit in Caada at costco is $999 plus 15% tax.

Very tempting...great price...

So, if you see something like this...

Warranty is only 90 days, which makes this a bit iffy. I'd toss down $80 for a camera bag and an additional 2 year warranty from nikon - not sure if the warranty works with refurbs tho

Would sure suck if it broke on a trip though...

the best deal ever in recent several months.

I've read that you can actually use Nikkor AI lenses...they won't meter so you have to use external metering (I've several Nikkor normal, wide and 100 and 200...but alas without the coupling for metering).

Is it correct that I can use these? Anyone have experience? I've read several great websites that speak to this issue, and I would like to hear from those who have used these lenses with the D series.

Appreciate the comments from those who have. (Or have decided that's an awful idea, too.)

Thanks OP! I've ordered one!

Been eyeing the D50 for the longest time and gave this one a shot! Best price I've seen around....

Great price on a highly recommended camera - just check www.dpreview.com

Ditto and snagged one.

The site below has it for $329+ shipping (came to $30 when shipping to WA) at CCI Camera City. Description says it's new. I have no experience with this store.

URL removed

Edit: Extremely poor rating for this store at resellerratings: http://www.resellerratings.com/seller1734.html. Please beware!!!

Great deal on a great camera. I almost did this last week with the 12% off but couldnt get it to work. Ended up getting a new one on eBay from cord camera. 3 yr nikon warranty, 18-55 nikon lens, nikon bag, 1GB card, card reader, spare battery, mini tripod, filter, nikon SLR photography book, and cleaning kit for 650.00. If your looking for new I highly recommend them.

Got one with additional 5% credit coupon, thanks OP.

Is sigma a better lense? What about Tamron 28mm to 300mm?

Holy, overstock.com is neither enjoying a good rating - only 3.08 out of 10 all time and 1.85 out of 10 in the last six months!!!!!!!

How come it is featured store at the fatwallet????? I've placed an order following you guys. But now I'm scared it is a scam or the camera will have defect. Any comment?

I wonder if I should cancel the order. Help.

Thinking about the same thing Tamron 28mm to 300mm F3.5-6.5, no VR no USM though.

I called Nikon and the 2 year extended warranty does not apply to refurbs.

Tamron has a new 17-50 lens that would go well on this camera, though it is $439. The 18-200 from tamron is not a bad lens either, I have owned the canon version of the 28-300 and it sucked; it was fine in the middle but soft at both ends. Great deal on a great camera though op!

Gad, why can't I find Minolta 5D for this price. Best price on refurb is $530 from fleabay... If anyone has a tip on a good deal for one, let me know. thx.

Ye, you are right. All my lens are Nikon AI manual lens, and they work great with D50. D50 even has a focus light to help your focus. When the item is focused, a green light will turn on in the view screen. The screen is even lighter than my Nikon F4 camera, so it is very easy to focus manually.

For metering, I do not think it is a problem in digital world, if you have some basic knowelge with photography. Take a picture, and you will soon know whether you use a right shutter or aperture in the LCD, so adjust in the second one accordingly. By the way, it is a plus that you can practice your eye metering.

If metering is a must, only D200 has this function, which will cost about $1600.

The Ai lens can use in M, and set the speed in the camera, and control the aperture in the lens. So working exatly as Nikon manual cameras.

By the way, just find that its flash can be adjusted, and it can flash in 1/2,1/4,1/8, 1/16. So I can definately control all the parts of the camera. I never imagine that D50 has this function, as I know only the highest series nikon flashes have this function(correct me if I am wrong).

I only have one AF lens(the tamron lens), so my wife can also enjoy the camera with its full auto functions.

To those who worried about refurbished item, especially how much the shutter had been used. there is a free software to check the times that shutter has been used.

http://www.opanda.com/en/download/index.html

get the free Opanda IExif & IExifPro -- Professional EXIF / GPS / IPTC Info Viewer.

Just take a jepg picture and use this software to open that picture, then you can see the shutter times in this software.

So, you will be sure of your toy.

daydaydvd Thanks! I got mixed impressions from the camera shop person who was obviously less forthright...it's good to know that I'm not sacrificing a couple grand of lenses. As I recall, that's what Nikon used to advertise: forward and legacy compatibility.

Your point about "eye metering" is my experience, too. After starting with a an FM and just using its in-camera metering manually is how I learned film/lens/light relationships, too.

I like the idea of being able to bracket a shot without the expense penalty and having the backup of photoshop.

I believe you are right about the auto flash synch-speed, too. Also, thanks for the "green light" focus aide. My film bodies FM/F2 and I always had an argument about low light and larger aperatures...but that's expected in that light/opening range.

If you have any favorite reference/website, I would be grateful. I stumbled upon this one: Nikon support link
but my research leading up to this was filled with different jargon so I absolutely never knew if I this option would work; so, again, thanks.

I bought the 18-55mm kit at BB for about $530 after PM to CompUSA (who were out of stock) and a 12% rewards coupon. Do it on a saturday when they're busy, much less likely to hassle you.

I then bought a Sigma 70-300mm lens on eBay for $70 shipped (I fell lucky). This lens is great, I'm sure it's far from the best ever but for my needs it's perfect.

Chris.

overstock.com is a good store. Their rating may not reflect it but I have gotten plenty of stuff from them with no problems.

Thank you, ethiopianbuffman. I feel better now.

It's interesting that the resellerrating.com does not necessarily tell the whole truth. I found bestbuy.com and CircuitCity.com have even worse rating here. But the newegg.com and chiefvalue.com that I bought things before both have very great rating. What's wrong with overstock, bestbuy and CircuitCity?

All above stores are very big stores for long time, you can trust the product they sell. the ratings are low mostly because of the price (normally higher than others), and customer service and support (they are big so they do not care), like Dell, people still have to buy from the anyay.

Thanks OP! What a great deal! It still seems to be in stock. I ordered late 7/2 and got a tracking 18 hours later. This deal came at a perfect time since my Oly C4000 was giving me fits yesterday while trying to take a decent pic at a soccer tournament. I would try to snap a shot of a goal being scored, but all I got was the players lining up for the next kickoff!

Now that I am finally in the world of D-SLRs, I got to get the everything from scratch. I decided on the Nikon 18-200 VR, but no one has them and I dont have the $800+. In the meantime, I read that the Nikon 50mm f1.8 is fantastic for $100 as a prime lense. I will still need a zoom so hopefully the 18-200mm will get plentiful in a few months.

I also read that the battery lasts a long time and only a cheapo $20 backup is needed. I had an extra Sandisk Ultra II 1 GB laying around. What I else do I need to get started?

You'll be happy with it.

I also read that the battery lasts a long time and only a cheapo $20 backup is needed.
The battery, in my experience, is awesome - I upgraded from a HP Photosmart 850, which took 4AAs and lasted 200 photos and on this - I've filled 4 gigs of SD cards in one day (used both raw and jpeg fine) and the battery still showed "full" at the end of the day.
The icon for low battery is 1/2 a battery, although I suspect that isn't the true halfway point. If you start using flash, obviously you'll get fewer exposures, but dpreview tested battery life to be 850 continous shots with flash encoded in RAW, with noise reduction on, etc. You'll have to try to kill the battery. Charger charges it in 2 hours and works fine on european and british power, you just need the adapter to be able to plug it in the socket.

I had an extra Sandisk Ultra II 1 GB laying around. What else do I need to get started?
You'll need a few more of those The camera isn't so picky when it comes to the sd card speed since it has a decent size internal buffer - be sure to format the cards on the camera to get better speed (if you format on the computer, it is noticably slower).
Pick up the remote too. A good flash if you're going to be doing portraits. The built in one is good, but is a bit harsh for portraits. The usb port is usb 2.0 and is pretty fast, so you don't need a card reader.
As I mentioned before, get a couple of PDA screen protectors and cut them to fit the back (and top too, I guess). More for resale value than anything else.
Oh, and a damn LED flashlight to read the top menu in the dark
A bigger hard drive to store the pictures

Thanks for the great info!! Now I'm gonna go even more broke, FAST...
