Agreed. Good thing is it's only one rebate per person so they can't do too much inventory damage.

I dont think people understand that "upgrades" are actually FULL versions. All the "upgrade" version does is ask for an old version of windows during installation to verify that you own one. Anything works even windows 95.

Can you use this on multiple machines to do the integrated SP install? I have two Dell machines with XP Home that have had some upgrades (that in some cases have screwed things up more than they helped!)

If you have a Dell xp cd you can slipstream the updates into that and make yourself a Dell xp with the servicepacks.

If Dell xp is on these I don't believe you can use the retail home, only a pro upgrade (as it would be going up a level).

Also I found this useful for instaling updates... check the ones you want (WGA is already unchecked, ) and is has a lot of useful tweaks, etc.

According to MS, XP Home upgrade requires at Windows 98 or later to qualify for the the upgrade.
Edit: Here is the official MS upgrade maxtrix

It should also be said that you can't upgrade on top of an upgrade. If you are doing a clean install of this and you insert a previous OS disk when asked during setup, it must be a full version disk.
I can confirm that win2k does qualify for a clean install upgrade, just not an "in place" upgrade.

OK, just to add some more confusion...

A few weeks ago, there was a similar deal at OD, though the rebate amount was less. Now, my memory is pretty lousy, but as I recall, when I did a full install of this same version (XP Home w/SP2 Upgrade edition), setup asked for an installation CD for Windows, and the list of eligible versions INCLUDED XP Home and Pro. I attributed this to the fact that I was installing on a machine that already had a full, legit (but not activated) Corporate license version of XP Pro. I remember being surprised, because the box only lists Win98/98SE/ME (I think).

I ended up inserting a Win98 CD, which it accepted. (I also remember noting that it did NOT require the product key for the Win98 CD).

What I'd like to know: Will the "one per household" limit from the previous rebate prevent me from using this one? (I'm guessing NO, since it's a different amount, and therefore a different rebate altogether.)

Dumb question: Does the Visa coupon work if you use a different charge card?

I have used a different credit card & still applied the coupon

Thanks! Final dumb question: Does OD.com go by my local time or PT, MT, ET, or when, to determine when it's 9/10/06 for the receipt?

IIRC, Office Depot HQ is located in Delray Beach, FL and they use ET for their ordering system.

Good luck!

Clarifying what namlook said....

Two different questions are being asked.

1. Can I just stick this in the drive and "upgrade" from Win98 (that way I don't have to get another drive or back anything up. The My Documents folder will be untouched and I won't have to reinstall all my programs?

The answer tothat question is YES, you can do that. You can look at the Upgrade matrix provided by Microsoft to determine which OSes can be "upgraded."

2. Can I "upgrade" from Win95 (meaning, can I do a completely new fresh install on a blank drive with this "upgrade" version of XP Home ?)

Yes, If you have a blank drive, just boot to the UPGRADE CD and install. You may or not be asked later to install the CD that you are "upgrading" from.

Mixing the two...

Can I "upgrade" my machine that is currently running Win95 or Win3.x ?

No, you can't do a straight "upgrade". You must do a fresh install BUT you CAN use this XP Home UPGRADE cd instead of paying a higher price for the "retail" disc.

No you can't according to MS unless you want to run an illegal OS. The XP Home Upgrade EULA explicity PROHIBITS the above behavior. The Upgrade license is only LEGAL if you UPGRADE from one of the MS QUALIFYING OSs and that OS was previously LEGALLY licensed to the computer you are upgrading with XP Home upgrade. You do not have to keep the original OS but it has to have been LEGALLY licensed to the computer you are upgrading . Otherwise you are required to buy the full version install to be LEGAL. The ONLY thing that make ANY MS OS legal is the end user agreeing to abide by the MS EULA for that MS product. IF you are not going to do that then you are wasting your money and you might as well install a downloaded illegal copy. There is NO difference in legal terms.

EDIT

My apologies, I should have been more precise. The WinXP upgrade CD will allow you to do a full fresh complete install and *might* ask you to insert a CD from an earlier OS (Win95, etcetera.)

Whether it is "legit" to do it or not is a different question.

Thread Clean, I think the point has been made on both sides of the coin on if it works and if it is ok to use the upgrade. I now return you back to normal programing. Please stay on topic.
