OK the early editions of WinXP Home upgrade accepted Windows95 or above as the older edition CD as proof of upgrade, however the new WinXP Home with SP2 Upgrade requires Windows 98 or above as the older edition CD.
I believe it just looks for a *.cab file to check eligibility. |

Here's another upgrade option for those willing. Use it to upgrade to Vista.
I know, not everyone wants to go to Vista but if someone doesn't have a legit version of windows and they want to go legit, it's a lot cheaper to: buy this winxp upgrade for 10$ and then purchase Vista Home Basic upgrade for 99$ than it is to purchase Vista Home Basic Full for 199$
Essentially purchase Vista Home Basic Full for 110$ instead of 199$ |

Am I the only one that is having a hard time getting the rebate to come up? It does not want to connect. Anyone else have it on another link? |

I wonder if OD is updating their site or doing maintenance? People in one of the other forum threads are reporting the same thing about a different rebate. |

Wouldn't matter about upgrading an upgrade if the XP upgrade is installed. The Vista upgrade would just check to see if an applicable OS is installed (which it would be), then run it's own upgrade. That's the way XP upgrade works right now. The only time you have to provide a disk to validate it is if the hard drive has no OS on it. |

I'm not sure if we can use this XP upgrade CD to migrate to Vista by using a Vista upgrade CD in the future. From what I've read looking into this, people have done a clean install of WinXP Home by using a Win98 (se, me) upgrade CD with the WinXP home upgrade CD. They inserted the Win98 upgrade CD when it asked for valid media and it worked. The discussion I've read said how they are essentially the same CDs. Now, will this work with WinVista? I don't guarantee it but am planning on purchasing WinXP home this Sunday.
edit: i see this was discussed earlier. The way I see it, if true, is that if a person upgrades from Win98 to Windows XP - all they have is the windows XP CD but it's still a valid license for Windows XP and by all accounts, a valid Windows XP is allowed to upgrade to Windows Vista. However, if a person does a clean install, the only have a Windows XP upgrade CD. This is really perplexing and I don't think anyone can know for sure until someone explicitly states that it worked for them, haha. |

why not upgrade to vista from win 98? Win98 isn't allowed to upgrade to Vista according to Microsoft's website. |

I had problems too but it came up after I turned off my firewall. Maybe try that if you are running a firewall.
And thanks OP and everyone else. This has been a a helpful thread. |

It actually doesn't work for the biege/cinnamon. I tried both. Looks better quality. I've used a black set before and definitely wouldn't order to get it again. |

Anyone knows where I can get Win98/95 so I can use this upgrade? I threw away my old Windows discs a long time ago. |

I would like to buy this deal just for the CD Key.
DO you think I could install this on a relatives computer using my OEM intall CD and punch in the CD Key from this deal.
I don't have an old OS Cd and want to avoid the nag for one.
I have installed the Compaq supplied WinXP Home cd on 2 of my laptops (Averatec and Acer) and just typed in the legit XP Home key from stickers underneath each laptop and it has worked.
My relative needs to run an authentic XP version.

False. It will do a clean install on a formatted drive (or it will format the drive for you of course) without any verification that you have a previous version of Windows. |
