completely agree with this observation. MIO was available via phone and I ordered one for delivry last week and the model I got was MIO C310x
quickNdirty said: Just an FYI- that Mio wasn't on Staples website just 2 days ago. More proof that that $149 deal will be there and available tomorrow morning.

That's what I'm trying to decide. Staples probably will be less crowded than CC, so I'm thinking Staples over CC. Not sure what time to go though. Maybe get there around 4 for 6am opening?

Ha, I didn't think of that. Wonder if I could find some free wifi in front of Staples.

$4.99 T-Mobile T-Zones workaround still works great for me in MA. Free WiFi would be even better

I'm suprised there aren't any comment on the unit at all but the prices. Prices aren't that important if the unit sucks. So the question is: Any comment on the unit itself? Is it any good?

No one talk about the unit itself because there were also two posts that go into detail about this unit. Just go search for MIO and you will find them.

Here is what I'm going to do:
(1) Buy @ CUSA tonight for $179AR (2) Waiting in line tomorrow morning at Staples (3) If I get Staples one, I can return CUSA unit. Otherwise, I'll keep it.

I want the newer one. I'm also thinking of going to CompUSA soon and trying to get it. Them going to BB for other stuff.
Read the threads man! This has been discussed in the other MIO thread. Its appears ALL stored advertising this model will be delivering the C310X version.
Time to dig out my red Fatwallet T-Shirt and head for Comp-Usa for 9pm tonight
Comp Usa was a no-go tonight. Got there around 8:30 and there were already about 300-500 people in line! The way they were letting them in the building I thought it would be close to midnight before I even got in.
Jackpot at CUSA tonight. Got there around 8:30 and probably 200 people in front of me. They open the doors and I search for the GPS, luckily I found it very quickly and it was still in a locked display. I was right in front though. Employee opens up the case and there's a mad grab for the 25-30 units they had. I got one and headed to the register. I whipped out the Staples ad (since that one was $149 OTD) and asked for PM, they were going to do it, but they there was no x in the model number of the Staples one. Then I pulled out the CC one with the x. The manager or whoever it was said ok, the clerk got an override, rang it up at $149, charged me and after the receipt she says, "oh there's a rebate too, here's the form". Looks like I got really lucky, got it for $100+tax AR and get to sleep in tomorrow.
I just bought one from CompUSA for $246 (tax included) and then $50 MIR. Not sure if I want to keep it but thats all I got for waiting in line for 1 hour. I may e.ba.y it just want some $50 profit.
Looks very good everyone wanted one and they only had 12.

I am interested in getting one for myself, but I am also not in a big hurry. Does anyone think its better to buy now, or will this kind of deal happen later in the future? I know with the TVs, those keep going down in price, but not sure about these GPS products.

Totally noob GPS question...
Do you need a subscription service for the use of the satellites or is that totally free? I'd just like to know whether you are set for life once you pick up a GPS unit or is there some subscription that you have to pay for the use of the software/hardware.

from my readings on the forums, free GPS use but getting updated maps might cost you later. For this model I think new ones starting 2007 will cost, but I dont know the price.

The GPS will pick up the satellite location for free. The map software is also included (built-in), so it will work without any extra cost. Some of the higher end GPS units display traffic data which is by subscription only. The Mio 310 does not offer the traffic data.
You will only have to pay for updated software if you want updated map information. I would assume they would release new software (map data) every year or so and it would optional.
Do not buy this mio c310 right now. I have developed voice recognization function for GPS, and new Mio 2007 model will have it, so you can let your voice to control the GPS.
