lens depends on kind of shotting you do.
For good starter lens for learning srl, Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II is good.
Another good on for the price is Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 XR DI AF.
And there are Canon L series, which most of them will cost more than the cost of xti body.
Good luck
Thanks for posting good deal. |

review...it says its better to buy the body only and then to spend on good lens...the starter kit with the cam is slow and weak
so not sure about it...dont have much experience with these cams |

This is a great deal. Although the stock lens is slow and cheap feeling, it's a great lens to start off with if you're just getting into digital photography. You're not gonna get many exposures for any type of magazine covers but it'll do for just learning purposes.
Lenses I'd recommend are:
both of these are great all around lenses and will make the stock lens look like dirt, they range from $300 used to about $375 new. - Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 - Sigma 24-70mm f2.8 - only drawback on this lens compared to the tamron is it takes 82mm filters.
Wide angle for the xti: canon efs 10-22mm.. this is the widest lens you can get for the aps-c sensor canons. it's soo wide that you have to watch your toes sometimes. Yes there are the tamron/sigma variations but this is by far better built/quality.
Telephoto: canon 70-200mm f/4L. great sharpness, best bang telephoto L lense for the money period in my opinion. Usually can be had for about $450 - 550ish. |

I'm trying to buy the XTi AND the PowerShot SD800 IS, but the 25% only applied to the XTi. Is there a way to get 25% off both items? |

um, D40 for a grand??? D40 is supposed to be the 'inexpensive'/starter SLR in Nikon's lineup.
D40 prices as listed on DPReview (much lower than $999)
I hope you really meant the D80 or mistyped the price or something.
update: just checked costco.com, and the D40 with 2GB card included is for $579 |
