D40 kit for $999? Great deal! Jump!

um, D40 for a grand??? D40 is supposed to be the 'inexpensive'/starter SLR in Nikon's lineup.

D40 prices as listed on DPReview (much lower than $999)

I hope you really meant the D80 or mistyped the price or something.

agree...checked costco.com it is D40... maybe he saw in store but i doubt it

How are you getting DPA to work?

review...it says its better to buy the body only and then to spend on good lens...the starter kit with the cam is slow and weak

so not sure about it...dont have much experience with these cams

I don't think that most of us here are professional photographers (professionals don't use Rebel anyway). We should be fine with the starter kit.

Gee, dude. You have been here since 2005 and still don't know how to get it to work? Today is your lucky day that you bumped to a nice guy like me. Select pay with credit card first, then you will see the offer on DPA.

I'm familiar with the trick...problem is I get to final checkout and I either get an error with my DPA due to 'Dell maintenance', or it gives me a total with no DPA discount added in.

Am I the only one seeing this?

It was find for me. The maintenance should have been completed alreaday since most companies do this at night. Did you try it again?

Kit lens is good to start on and determine what's best for your shooting style. It can take surprisingly decent pictures in good light..

But to get the maximum out of the camera, it's best to step up. The body is "disposable". The lenses will last you for years, and if they're quality, will sell for nearly as much as you bought them new. Check eBay if you don't believe me. Personally, I've got my eye on the ef-s 17-55 f/2.8 IS and the ef 70-200 F/4 L IS. It's a great combination for this camera. Without decent lenses, you're wasting the camera. That being said, the most important element is the person behind the camera. But if you've purchased an SLR, you better learn how to use it. Otherwise, sell it and buy a P&S

For those looking to get in slr arena, this is the right time. I thought I was getting low enough with 660 body only, but this one ,kills my dream.

690 for kit is brainless. Go for it.

As for lens,

I can vouch for canon 50 1.8 and tamron 28-75 since I'm using them myself.
Just beware the tamron is a little noisy and AF is not as fast as canon.

I wished I could wait longer, but I'm happy with my xti. Kit lens is just a waste.

I got it to work. I guess Dell just hiccups randomly during the night...the DPA seems to work fine now. Thanks OP!

still debating.. for beginners (who are interested in pro photography)

K110D for $369

or

Rebel XTi for $675

I've read enough that the Rebel is better in terms of lens and stuff, but I'm not even going to buy a $1000 lens at any time in the near future. By the time I get that good, I'd be upgrading the camera anyway... thoughts?

also, what are the resale values like? I looked up on eBay, both seem to be selling for about the same prices $380 for K110 and Rebel for around $700. Any guidance would be really appreciated

Thanks OP....scored 1 with the new code. Now I hope it arrives

Cheers!

Resale on bodies is good through the first replacement cycle. Lenses can sell for 100% of their original purchase price used if you get them for a decent deal new. My thought would be you're really underestimating the capabilities of the XTI.

For this price, getting the XTI is no decision at all. If you want to see what it can do with a good lense and a good operator, check out forums like www.photography-on-the.net and the like.
