Thanks! Been looking for one of these

Yeah, green

I actually used mine as a WAP. It worded good, it's a cheap WAP, and all you have to do is throw the little switch.

Of course, as a router, this is one of the best out there for the money. I was amazed at it's range.

This deal was available in the past, but it remains a good deal nevertheless.

Old Thread

Thanks for the headsup OP.

Missed the deal last time around and regretted it, in for one. Thanks OP

Ordered one, thanks OP!!

Don't need it but can't resist the chance to play with DD-WRT this time Thanks OP!

Instructions on flashing this router to DD-WRT

Great router to partner with the DD-WRT firmware.

Any comments on this to go with it?

Nevermind, same rebate form.

Got one last month. Loaded DD-WRT V23SP2. One reboot (that I've noticed) so far but stable otherwise. Anyone have any probs with Verizon DSL using DHCP? Not sure how often it's rebooted. Uptime 3 days so far.

How do it's spec's compare with WRT54G v3 ?

What's the benefits of hacking the router to get the DD-WRT may I ask?

To many to list...
DD-WRT wiki (check out the features section)

flashed to Tomato firmware. so far working flawlessly

I did the same and works great.

thanks op couldn't help myself.. I already have one.. and I only need one.. but you never know when a friend needs one. And I am that happy with it that I would give it to a friend in need.

I was running the stock buffalo firmware for over a year and then switched to DD-WRT. I should have done that a long time ago. Wireless range improved greatly. The stock GUI interface was really slow and not really great. Sometimes my router would need to get reset with the stock firmware(not all the time but sometimes).

I also got another buffalo to act as a wireless bridge for my Xbox360.

Two Questions:

1. How does the WHR-G54S compare to a v3 WRT-54G ?

2. How does Tomato Compare to DD-WRT ?

---

I've been using DD-WRT on my WRT-54g for yrs now, but I've been out of the loop for a while and this is the first I've heard of Tomato... I checked out the main site and it looks cleaner then DD-WRT...
Pro's Con's ?

I've been running my little CompUSA Wireless G router for a while, so much more stable than my old DLink. I wanted to pickup a WRT54G back then, couldn't find one cheap. I just might go down and buy this one. Does anyone know, with DD-WRT on this can you change settings and change port mapping w/o rebooting? I hate that.

Thanks OP, +1 for a super-cheap DD-wrt/openWrt wireless router.

i got one last month and i'm tempted to get another one. is this a new rebate offer? are there any exclusions on this rebate if i ordered one last time?

in for one, thanks.

Thinking of picking up an extra one, although I have absolutely no use for it at this point.

ehhh.. i dont know

Tomato compared to DD-WRT:
More stable
More efficient
Better QOS
Pretty bandwidth graphs
Nicer interface
Most settings can be changed without the router restarting
Less features (though it still has way more than most people need, and a ton that dont come with stock firmware)

anyone got the rebate form to download? i can't find it online anymore.

I have this router flashed with the latest Tomato Firmware. I have been very happy except for one thing...when I'm away from my computer for a long time, and them come back, it's like the internet connection has dropped and it won't respond (sometimes over a minute) before it's able to connect to a web site. This only happens on web browsing (http). My SMTP mail and SunRocket is always good. Once I finally connect to a web site everything is very stable. Any help or ideas why this is happening and what I can do will be very appreciated...

TIA

So the Tomato > DD-WRT? Or vice versa?

Iceboie said: So the Tomato > DD-WRT? Or vice versa?

really doubt you'll see a difference. Either one is good. Whichever has a better set of instructions of flashing the firmware.. since that's the part that really counts. Don't want a $30 brick. (I've used dd-wrt for many months now, and it's uptime is pretty stable for me.. 110 days and counting so I'm not complaining. Tomato can probably offer the same thing, so like I said, whichever is easiest to install.)

Thank you all for your replies and thanks OP. GREEN.

go with tomato!

By the way, I originally had DD-WRT, but switched to Tomato. I like the Tomato interface better. The only thing I wish Tomato had is VPN, but I also agree that the 3rd party firmware shouldn't get too bloated with features some people will never use.

Its late and I am too lazy to search. Does Tomato have Static DHCP?

I just happen to be looking that up!

ditto.... overall very impressed with this router. Much much faster than the Belkin fd router I got FAR several years back. I can stream Rhapsody, youtube, and google vid without locking up the router. I highly recommend this router. It's streaming performance is phenominal..

2 questions:

1) does tomato have the autoAP script that dd-wrt has? or a similar type interface was a auto-detect & connect wireless bridge

2) is the HP version worth $25 more, or will adjusting the transmit gains with a third party firmware be sufficient?

Green for you OP! Bl**dy figures though, I just bought 2 of these critters for $29.99AR on the 19th

I'll help out with my own 1st question:
According to the DD-WRT wiki (Router Comparison Table) the WHR is similar to the v3 WRT with it's specs:
Both have 200MHz procs (stable overclockable to 216MHz), Both have 16Mb of RAM and 4Mb of Flash...
So which has the better wireless signal/reception?

I can't find my rebate info at www.web-rebates.com/buffalo either. I have to fax my doc in after I called but it is in the system now.
