Have you guys heard of the new Sony eReader? It's pretty awesome looking, I especially like how the screen looks like an actual page of a book so it don't strain your eyes. Here's an image of it.

I was about to buy one full-price when I found this out.. if you sign up for the Sony Card or use Sony Rewards if you already have the card, you can get it for only $49.95! This thing is usually $299 and the cheapest I've seen it is $288 on PriceGrabber. Yeah, I know, another credit card, but it's DEFINITELY worth it if I get this thing for over 80% off! They're even throwing in $149 worth of e-books, which is cool, cause I think it holds some 600 books, plus you can add Sony memory sticks and SD cards to it (now I can have my eBooks and my Wii Virtual Console games on the same card, ha ha!)

Here's the link to sign-up for the card to get the deal. If you have the card already, I think you just go to sonyrewards.com or call customer service directly. Does anyone else have the eReader or now plan on getting it with this offer? What do you think?

I already have a Sony card and am definitely interested in this, but I don't see anything about it in Sony Rewards. Where did you see something about getting this if you're already a Sony card holder?

Gotta love the negs with no response. I gave you green. I think this is a great deal for someone who already has the card or is going to sign up for one. These are awesome little gadgets, and I would love to get one at this price. Anyone Sony card holders want to grab one for me?

The negatives are because it's totally misleading -- this is ONLY for new signups/activations.

I see the ereader on sony rewards but its 29,999 points. How do I get it for 49.95?

I think the deal for people who already have Sony Cards is a recent addition, because Sony Card holders really wanted it. That's the info I got from customer service, but I'm guessing it's not on the site yet. The link I had is specifically for signing up for the card; sorry if there's been any confusion. I'll try to find out how exactly you go about getting the deal if you already have a card.

Thanks!

Incidentally, I didn't give you a negative; that's just my guess on why you're getting them. If existing Sony card holders can get in on this, that'd be great.

Thanks and totally understand, can't please 'em all. Just going by the info I knew. I'll keep you posted.

I'd absolutely get this if I could get it for $50...I might have to call about it. But who would you call, the CC customer service #?

BTW, where did you get the info that the $50 deal was good for existing card holders too? If you read the details on the offer you link, it states for new accounts only, so I assume no go for me. Doh!

Sorry for my ignorance. Is there any benefit of using Sony eReader to read ebook rather than PDA except the size difference?

Reading off PDA or other backlit LCD screens are suppose to be bad for your eyes. This unit mimics paper and the battery life is better than PDAs and such devices.

I just applied for the CC. Reading through the thing, it doesn't say anything about paying off the balance and cancelling it. Is there a certain term that I am signing up for here that anyone saw?

This has NOTHING to do with a PDA. The eReader uses a new type of screen, usually called epaper, that has such impressive contrast and crispness that it looks like printed paper and can thus be read at broad daylight etc. Also these screens only use power when you change the page (i.e. rearrange the microdots that make up the image), so battery power is measured by page changes - you can have it showing a single static page indefinatelly.

The eReaders use a new technology that only uses power when rendering a new page. You can get an insane amount of page turns before the battery runs out.

Also, it's MUCH easier on the eyes. You have to see one in person to really understand the difference.

Thanks for enlightenment!

Good for students, my MBA classes at University of Phoenix were all eBook only and it was a pain toting my laptop to class all of the time. It would have been nice to have this back then but I don't need it now. I've been more into audiobooks lately.

Pretty cool. Thanks for the info.

Just applied for the card.

Doesn't the Sony card give you $100 in statement credit during the first month? Does this promo override the $100 statement credit promo or can you get both?

Got one. Hope it comes.

The sad sad thing is I have tried to cancel my sony card 3-4 times. The best I managed was to move the credit line, but $500 to my other chase cards. They told me they can't move the last $500 (I had asked to consolidate all my credit line to other cards), so they would leave it on the Sony and close it. This is a few months now and they tell me ok, we are closing the card on all my calls, but it still shows up when I log on at chase.com... They just want me to keep it for some reason...
Otherwise, I would have jumped in with a new account...

Thanks OP!

is there any code for this one? the application form is just
a generic one, I hope that they will honor this offer.

did anybody apply for sony card?

I do want to get a SONY reader, iRex iLiad is too expensive for me.

Just save a print screen of the promo in case there are any issues down the road. Same thing happened when they had the $100 gc a while ago so you should be fine.

Looks nice, which formats it can handle? I hope it is not SONY specified.

it supports RTF, txt, pdf, bbeb(sony format)

but pdf doesn't look good on sony reader. it looks too light to be readable.

I hope that sony can solve this problem with Adobe, with the new Adobe Digital experience.

I hope so too, it would be way too cool to read papers with this.

FYI, $49.95 doesn't include shipping. (They don't say how much shipping is.)

Also, the $149 eBooks credit is actually $50 + 50 free "classic" titles from the following list, most (all?) of which are available for free from Project Gutenberg:

http://ebooks.connect.com/specials/sonyclassics/index.html

The credit isn't specific to this offer, either; you can get the same deal no matter how you obtain your eReader. You have to receive and "authorize" your eReader by 7/31/07 and spend the credit by 8/31/07. It requires installing some Windows software (XP or Vista) -- and you know how well-loved Sony DRM software is. Complete terms:

http://ebooks.connect.com/promos/terms_149/index.html

Still a good deal for the reader, though.

wow, interesting. this is a great deal if it works. i've been interested in this sony reader for quite a while but never bothered because of the price. i can't really pass this up!

i applied for the card and got a web page & email stating that i'll be notified of my approval status in 30 days. is everyone getting this, or are people getting approved instantly? i have a pretty solid credit score (700, give or take 10 points depending on the credit agency). seems lame that they'll make you wait 30 days to find out if you're approved, which would make it too late to register your ebook reader on that site to get the $150 worth of free eBooks.

how do you get this after getting approved for the card? the application seemed to be pretty generic.

thanks OP

PDFs don't look good?? Bummer! A lot of good tech books get released in PDF format also.

If you have questions about how to make your own content for the reader, what formats look good, how to reformat PDFs, etc., check out the Mobile Read forums here. They have lots of good advice, links to good programs, etc.

Look for threads about the program called Book Designer. We have a reader already and purchase content from Fictionwise.com, as well as some downloads from project gutenberg, and Book Designer is a great tool for converting items from these sources.

Go play with it at CompUSA before you buy it.
I wasn't impressed.

If you're looking for a lower priced alternative...

I've been following these ereaders for a while, but decided to go with the recent Buy.com Nokia 770 deal for a low priced ebook reader. Paired with FBReader, it's working out great, plus it has the added bonus of web browsing, media, chat and voice chat.

I'm sure an e-ink or OLED ebook reader will be in my future, but I'm waiting another generation or two for prices to come down.

By the way, I just saw this on SD:

Sony PRS-500 E-Book Reader $99

By the way, I just saw this on SD:

Sony PRS-500 E-Book Reader $99

Is it the same thing? If yes, applying for the Sony Credit card only save $50.

Yes, it's the same thing.
