$599 at Dell Small Business for a notebook with Intel Core2Duo with decent 120GB HD, DVD writer, and other features.

Actually it's the low end line replacing the inspiron and dimension in small business. The vostro PC's apparently won't have trialware installed, and a bunch of other marketing crap about support etc.
It's sad actually as you can't buy dimension PC's or Inspirons through small business anymore.
It's got pretty decent specs for the price, especially the 8400gs. Though low end it's better than integrated.

One thing that's really nice about this new brand is that you can choose not to have pieces of crapware installed. Make sure you go through all the options pages and get rid of trial antivirus, productivity, PC tune up, and others.
Hmm, the low-end Vostro ($449 config from above poster) looks to be a black-colored Inspiron 1501, which is still on sale at SB with better specs for $449 by searching Fatwallet.
The OP's Intel Vostro deal seems good in comparison, especially with the Santa Rosa Core 2 Duo and Nvidia DX10 dedicated video card- pluses at this price point. I think that this is also an Inspiron replacement due to the black plastic design, but for $600 without rebates, you really can't beat it.
Edit: From a Google search, Notebook Review confirms that the Intel Vostro models are rebranded Dell Inspiron 1420, 1520, and 1720 laptops.

Seems like a really good deal, in 4 1
Edit: On second glance, it's a GREAT deal, free upgrade to True Life and free shipping.
At least Dell is finally giving the option to remove their bloatware. Apparently they actually are listening to the comments from users...it just took them a long time to follow through.

The 1400 is a heck of a deal for only $10 more. Just picked up a couple for customers.

The 1400 at base price isn't a deal though, at least not in my opinion.

You could play the waiting game on computers/technology forever, if you received a good deal on the Inspiron, my suggestion is to be happy with the fact you got a good deal on the Inspiron.
What kind of battery life would this have when watching a movie (DVD)? I'd like to be able to watch a full movie when on a plane before the battery runs out.

Hmmmm....just ordered the Inspiron 1501 $449 deal from here: Linky ..........upgraded with a 9 cell battery. Not scheduled to ship until July 31.
Is the Vostro 1500 that much better (other than the CD/DVD burner and larger HD) ...and worth the extra $$ (in my case it would be $150....also with 9 cell battery)?
Thanks.

better processor - Core 2 Duo T5470 v Athlon TK-53 better GPU - dedicated 128MB NVIDIA GeForce 8400M GS v Integered ATI crap better drive - 8X CD/DVD Burner v 24X CD Burner/DVD player better HD - 120G v 80GB
yeah it worth extra $150 w/ new design (vostro 1500 = gray insprion 1521) and durable metal alloy case personally i wouldn't buy any vista notebook without dedicated graphics RAM with XP - cheaper deal might be worth lokking into my 2 cent

I'm going with XP, so Vista isn't an issue ...and this lappy is for my kid (13) and school, but I don't wanna hafta be looking to upgrade a year from now, lol...I want it to last.
Anyone know what the cancellation deal is with Dell? I ordered the 1501 5 days ago, if I wanted to cancel that order and replace it with the Vostro 1500, would there be a problem?

Anyone buying XP is foolish in my opinion. As much as you may "dislike" Vista, the problem is not with Vista itself. To be honest, most of the complaints I have heard about Vista can be easily fixed and most of the time a user's lack of knowledge is what leads to the flaming and complaining. Do you really want your brand new computer to have a license for an out dated product?

GOOD DEAL!!! In for one! Good processor, Core 2 Duo with 800 Mhz FSB. (corrected: Penryn 45nm wafer is not yet due) How am I gonna catch up with all these nanometer war game?
I wish the graphic cards have more memory plus a HDMI port. That would be perfect!
I just got the 1400 which seems to be a bit better deal if you don't mind a bit smaller screen with a higher contrast (better). I was also reading on another deal site (where I found the 1400 deal) that even though the order confirmation via email lists the 8400 graphics, the details on the Dell site show integrated graphics, not the card. I would recommend checking the Dell site if you got either one to make sure that it lists the right graphics selection. I just checked mine it was WRONG, it lists intergrated graphics which is not even a choice instead of the 8400 card. Nothing can be changed untill tomorrow as Dell Business is only open from 7am - 7pm and they are the only ones that can make a change since many people have already tried, so don't waste your life tonight. Hopefully the 1500 orders are correct, but I would check to be safe. Good luck
A note on Vista: it is just new and has some bugs and incompatibilities, but soon it will be the current XP and then XP will be old and slowly become obsolete just like the rest of windows previous versions. I am getting vista just because it will be fine and become the main windows OS. Something to think about if you are looking to be more future proof.

What about the complaints that can't be easily fixed because legacy apps people use at work doesn't support Vista? Or that sysadmins don't want to touch it - or let it touch their network. Or does "give boss the finger and get a new job" count as am easy fix?
To say nothing of crap driver support for some older products. Yay, lets buy a new scanner or AIO printer! (ok, so this is FW, thats not a huge deal) Or crap driver support from nvidia/ati and games that run like crap (although it is finally getting better now)

That's almost always the case though then it comes to new operating systems. It's inevitable. When XP came out people were saying that it sucked for games and that there was no reason to upgrade from their windows 98 systems yet lo and behold, XP is now the best operating system for gaming. Of course any sort of sysadmin wouldn't want to use vista yet it's still a new product and it'll be another half a year before people get completely use to the idea of vista as opposed to XP.

Very well said. As a personal user, I would purchase this laptop with Vista and just wait for the updates. I am sure that with continuous updates, the operating system will turn out fine.
I have the standard (anti-glare) 1280x800 screen. When the screen is NOT at full brightness, there is a buzzing sound. A quick search on the Net found a couple of other people with the same issue. Have you encountered such problem? I'm planning to contact Dell tomorrow.
