If he can cut and install to his vehicle, then he may need new engine soon. Some good engine will suck the air filter all in ( do your know how strong engine vacuum at 5000RPM?). I see this before . Good luck man I'm hoping he means the cabin air filter. Saab charges $41 for the 92x filter but I think you can cut 4 filters from one Filtrete.

I can't help but think these HVAC experts are talking in terms of system efficiency and lifespan... not in terms of filtration capability. I'm willing to trade off some amount of efficiency in favor of cleaner lungs.

Same here. I won't use them for just those reasons.

It wasn't that long ago that cabin air wasn't filtered at all, just sucked in from the outside and then heated or cooled and fed to the cabin. Then manufacturers started putting cabin air filters in with activated charcoal and so on to reduce odors and dust inside the car and/or make their cars seem more sophisticated and/or add one more doo-dad that would require an expensive replacement part at some point. I really don't think there's any magic to what kind of filter you have in your cabin air intake duct, so if you want to make your own, I say more power to you.
