A Brief History of Black Friday

The day after Thanksgiving is frequently referred to as "Black Friday". One of the major U.S. holiday shopping days, it is the day many U.S. consumers begin Christmas shopping. The day is heavily promoted by retailers. The origin of Black Friday comes from the shift to profitability during the holiday season. Black Friday was when retailers went from being unprofitable, or "in the red," to being profitable, or "in the black" - at a time when accounting records were kept by hand and red indicated loss and black profit. The day is not important just for traditional retailers. Black Friday is also a huge day for internet retailers.

When do the ads come in the newspaper?

Traditionally, the actual printed ads come with your newspaper on Thanksgiving Day, however in some areas they will be in the paper on Wednesday or on Black Friday itself. Check with your local newspaper if you need to know the exact date. Some retailers such as WalMart occasionally distribute their ads sooner, either with the newspaper or in the mail. Some stores have the ads at the actual stores days in advance of Black Friday as well.

Do retailers allow price matching or returning & rebuying for BF items?

Good question, however there is no set answer for this. Each retailer makes their own decisions and policies, and those can even change from year to year. Your best bet is to contact the retailer directly to get their price matching policy. Some stores that allow it during the year won't allow it during Black Friday. Different stores in different areas might have different policies as well.

What about price matching and layaway?

In the vast majority of cases, each store will set it's own policy regarding pricematching and layaway as it relates to Black Friday. Many times the stores' policies change year to year, so posting a new thread will not likely get you a confirmed answer.

wow its coming soon. how about tv predictions? how low they will they be?

Must be a joke!

Wow, thats early

This may be correct. I know alot of companies that have in store ads at around 10 weeks...ok they are preliminary and subject to some change. This is only at the retail store level. So the Corporate operations have the preliminary ads even sooner than that. I would suspect this is a true ad.

I can tell you are a new member just by that line.

TV prices are don't change great throughout the year. They are always dropping slowly but never jump around like some other products.

You rarely get a good deal on a new tv on black friday.

Your rather get a non-name brand tv for dirt cheap (which some people love and stand hours in line for) or you get an older model brand name tv for a highly discounted price.

But you never really get a great name brand tv (new model) cheaper on Black Friday. I find the newer tvs to be much cheaper in January.

TVs are cheaper in Feb AFTER the superbowl.

bring on the ultra cheap, powerful lappys, my HP bf special needs replacing.

WRONG. oleivia was a no name brand, but it is certainly not a BAD brand. I disagree with your statement. it may not be sony, Toshiba, but some of those tv's are decent. just because something may be cheaper, doesnt make it not worthy of equalling sony or other brands in quality. nothing but pure price pretentiousness

i'm predicting this years bonanza products to be cell phones, & dells. i think Dell will make a special BF build for WalMart this year.

May I say wow, op! I just wish I could come up with the lotto number of next week.

didnt best buy have a 42inch panasonic for $999 last year? or am i dreaming?

There should really be one thread for each store and just make this thread an index to lead to them. Need to be able to discuss the deals from each store apart from all the other stores or it will just get way too useless.

nikedunksb said: didnt best buy have a 42inch panasonic for $999 last year? or am i dreaming?

And a 40 inch Sony LCD.

That is where you are wrong.

There are very few companies that develop tv technology. For instance, with LCD TVs you have Sharp, Sony, Samsung, LG and a few others.

They develop the TV, when they come out with new models, in an effort to make more money they sell their designs to the no-names which in turn cheaply output a slightly modified version of that tv.

That being said, there is nothing wrong with tv's such as Olevia, they have a purpose. But, don't act like they are greatest thing since sliced bread because the name brands have always been far ahead of the competition.

Not sure what is really meant by no name brand - Olivia is a name right? Olivia are U.S. T.V's made by the Syntax-Brillian Corporation in Tempe, AZ. Olivia T.V.'s are quality made and if no name means cheap, then you are wrong.

IIRC, Ace Hardware was the first store to leak last year, shortly followed by Sears and Kmart. Who knows this year since Kmart is Sears. >_>

IIRC Olevia came from nowhere a few years ago and is now the #2-selling brand of TV.

Are Olevia TVs really made in the USA, or is just that the company HQ is there?

I think we'll also see a GPS unit well under $150 this BF (recall that $199 was last year's magic price point for GPS).

russvegas said: Wow, thats early

Not really. We're only 10 weeks out from BF, and people at corporate have long since decided what the majority of BF items are going to be. It won't be long before more information starts to come out as more and more people at places like graphic design firms and printer and ad stuffers start to see the final lists of BF items.

In my extended family there is a Westinghouse TV and four Westinghouse PC monitors. Everyone who has one loves it, especially in light of value for price paid. Is Westinghouse a "name" brand? Who knows. It's not the same Westinghouse that used to make elevators and escalators and light bulbs, it's just a brand name that somebody purchased and stuck on video equipment to get people's attention. That doesn't make Westinghouse video displays better or worse than they would have been if they were called "Joe's Equipment Company."

Frankly, the way TV technology is evolving, just about any TV or any monitor by any company made today is going to be an improvement over any product made 2 or 3 years ago. My 2-year-old Sony LCD TV that cost $2500 in some ways pales in comparison to a new comparable TV that wouldn't empty my wallet anywhere near as much.

BTW, when do the new TV's start to hit shelves? It's in late spring, a few months after CES, isn't it?

No, you can tell he's a new member by the "New Member" under his name.
Same way I can tell you are a jaded prick who's posted 2,000 snide unhelpful messages just by the "2K" under your name.

It was a simple question - lay off.

Who goes to Ace Hardware for BF? Just curious. I mean out of all the places to go, that just seems weird.

I have a feeling that retailers are going to be dumping their older Sharp LCDs during BF (62U). I can't imagine they've been selling well considering the recent F&F promotion over at Sharp Direct. Their Authorized Dealer network must be really pissed off!!!

Also those name brand $1000 plasmas will probably hit the $799 mark. There might be some deals on 720p LCDs but I doubt they will drop much beyond what we've seen here on FW.

FAR light bulbs and other stuff that you think you will use but will never use

Hey now, when California and other states ban incandescent light bulbs, those FAR bulbs you got on BF at Ace and FAR at Rite Aid will bring in some big bucks on eBay!

Ace Hardware has a lot of ODD's and ENDs..... I go there all the time.......Now, I don't know about BF !!

they are NOW, but when they first came out they were a new brand and brand afficinados I'm sure said they were equal to coby, apex,etc.. cheap brand status. I just wanted to show just because a brand isn't one that hasn't pioneered new technology doesn't mean that they are unworthy. it's just some people think unless it is a top of the line brand, it is junk, and thats not so.jonesbeach said; Olevia came from nowhere a few years ago and is now the #2-selling brand of TV.

My 57 inch HD Toshiba for $700 disagrees with you. (bought 3 years ago)

My TV predictions:

Name brand sub-$700 42" 720p flat panels (Like this years version of the Panasonic that was $999 last year).
Name brand sub-$1000 42" 1080p, and 50" 720p
50" 1080p - around $1250

Watch for ridiculous prices on DLP's (sub-$500) 42" + 1080p

I'm getting all excited now! I can't wait to see what TV I'm going to get this year... Last year it was the $999 Panny (great TV)

And then not long after Black Friday they had the Samsung 42" Plasma 720p for $799.

biglittle said: Who goes to Ace Hardware for BF? Just curious. I mean out of all the places to go, that just seems weird. Some of us might find something we like in the Ace BF ad and be able to PM at another place where there will be many things we like!

WOW that really dates ME! I remember a lot of Westinghouse products including appliances, tvs, etc. I think it was in the 60's. But, they were a name brand back then.

Yay!!! I love blackfriday and looking at ads early I can't wait for the bestbuy and Circuit City ads to leak. DH wants a 50" plasma and we need a new laptop so those will be the ads I'll be watching for.

Yes,yes,yes....BF sales....on my list...1. Intel E6750 2. Geforce 8800 GTX

dang...already started it....time to spend more more $$$$$$$

Well this thread is in the crapper already. Enough about the TV's already. We do not need 100's of pages arguing about brands and prices. Either post a BF deal, or keep it shut!
