***Dead*** Hitachi 200GB 2.5" 7200rpm (7K200) at BestBuy $125.99 + tax B&M Archived From: Expired Deals

The drive is sold as 5400rpm, but apparently many contain a 200GB 7K200 (HTS722020K9SA00) 16MB Buffer SATA drive inside. I've personally confirmed this with 2 separate units already.


There seems to be at least 2 different batches of these drives. It looks like the 7200rpm drives have the serial number sticker on the bottom of the package, with the S/N starting with "DTG". The ones with the 5400rpm drive has a the S/N sticker on the back of the packaging starting with some number other than "DTG".


Note that this external drive is only covered by Hitachi's warranty for 1 year, as opposed to the 3 yr warranty on the retail drive alone.

Here is a helpful note for those that are replacing MacBook hard drives. I have a Core 2 Duo 2ghz.

Plug the external hard drive into USB Port.
Reformat the drive using Disk Utility - Note, Make sure to select Partition-->Options-->GUID Partition Table

Follow These directions to clone the hard drive - Link to hard drive duplication

Swap out the hard drives.

You can find a tutorial on google.

Start the computer while holding the option key then select the new hard drive.

System should boot.

Last step is to select the startup disk System Preferences--> Startup Disk

I took me a long time to figure this all out so I hope it helps someone.

Because it contains a 2.5" laptop drive that goes for $200 + by itself.

Hmm...

A 200gb, 7200RPM external drive that is USB-POWERED for $149?

BB specs page doesn't say so, but I'm thinking that this is actually a 2.5" notebook drive! Any chance we could pop it open and swap the drive into a laptop?

Just for comparison, a 200gb hitachi 7200rpm notebook drive on Newegg goes for over $200! (NEwegg link)

Can anyone confirm that there is a 2.5" drive inside here that could be swapped into a laptop? If so, then this is pretty hot!

You mean the WD? It's 5400rpm, vs the Hitachi @ 7200rpm

Personally will stay away from Hitachi. Bought a 250G PATA a few years ago and partitioned to two. One part died last year.

How come the clueless are always the quickest to post?

This is more or less the fastest laptop hard disk series in the world... and considering the biggest bottleneck in most laptops is in fact their storage mechanism, putting one of these in will make a big, noticeable difference in everyday computer use.
