**YMMV** The drive is sold as 5400rpm, but apparently many contain a 200GB 7K200 (HTS722020K9SA00) 16MB Buffer SATA drive inside. I've personally confirmed this with 2 separate units already.
There seems to be at least 2 different batches of these drives. It looks like the 7200rpm drives have the serial number sticker on the bottom of the package, with the S/N starting with "DTG". The ones with the 5400rpm drive has a the S/N sticker on the back of the packaging starting with some number other than "DTG".
Note that this external drive is only covered by Hitachi's warranty for 1 year, as opposed to the 3 yr warranty on the retail drive alone.
A 200gb, 7200RPM external drive that is USB-POWERED for $149?
BB specs page doesn't say so, but I'm thinking that this is actually a 2.5" notebook drive! Any chance we could pop it open and swap the drive into a laptop?
Just for comparison, a 200gb hitachi 7200rpm notebook drive on Newegg goes for over $200! (NEwegg link)
Can anyone confirm that there is a 2.5" drive inside here that could be swapped into a laptop? If so, then this is pretty hot!
would be pretty hot if it is a 200gb 2.5 7200rpm. i would buy this and switch my Dell hard drive out. What are the chances of getting the 7200rpm version?

Set up repair online sent the drive in to CA. Recieved the replaicement direct from China.

why is it the 2nd post in every deal always the silliest and deserve all the red!!!!
How come the clueless are always the quickest to post?
This is more or less the fastest laptop hard disk series in the world... and considering the biggest bottleneck in most laptops is in fact their storage mechanism, putting one of these in will make a big, noticeable difference in everyday computer use.

Depends on your laptop. Some are dead simple, some are not.
Thanks op, I'm considering one.

How do we know this is a sata drive and not an IDE drive?
Thanks OP - Just went out to get one. There were only two left at the BB I went to that had the DTG serial (remaining were some other S/N). Won't be able to check until I get back later today. Hopefully its a 7200 like you said as I just purchased a stand alone drive for $215 recently as I use VMWare quite a bit on my laptop.

Just picked one up from my local BB. It had the DTG serial number on the bottom. Used the 10% coupon with no problem and plugged it into the laptop. It identified the drive as a HTS722020K9SA00.

I just picked a DTG one up from the North Ave store in Chicago, cracked her open, and it's a 7K200. I left 5 on the shelf, all DTGs.

Hmmmm... Tempting to get one of these and try to slap it into my HP tx1000z I just ordered. Anyone know if it will work or how difficult it might be? I've read through tabletpcreview.com's forums on the subject, but couldn't find any info. Any help would be appreciated.
Wolverine88 said: Btw, how to open it? use flathead driver to open it along with USB port?
There are two screws underneath the bottom sticker. I don't have the enclosure in front of me, but I believe it's the sticker with the S/N. Remove those screws and slide the whole bottom piece back to open.

Under the serial # tag are two screws, remove them first, pull forward to get the bottom of, maybe run thin flathead to loosen it... I kinda sacrificed mine by pulling it apart but I'll crazy glue it together when I replace the drive.
