I opened up the case but found that it doesn't use coin battery. Any one have idea how to replace backup battery?

As some others have indicated with their units, I too have the problem where the backup battery shows full charge, but if the main battery is removed even momentarily it will not maintain the memory and starts up in the calibration mode again.

I disassembled the unit and found the backup battery located on the smaller PCB just behind the front buttons. You have to remove the back cover, and then the main PCB to get to it. BE CAREFUL if trying this, as there is the ribbon cable connecting the LCD panel to the PCB, and a connector between the two boards, and it isn't easy to remove the main board because of these and having to maneuver around the side wheel and bottom connector that are externally exposed through the side of the outer plastic assembly. This may not be something to try for those not experienced with dealing with electronics.

Now for the (potentially) bad news. This is a rechargeable cell, and not sure how a replacement can be ordered. It has a lead frame spot welded to it to connect to the PC board. I measured it and it measured up to ~1.3V (good level?) and a quick current test on it showed almost 0.5A (should be more than adequate), so I am not so sure it is the battery but hopefully. The reference designator on the PCB for that battery is "B1" and the battery has a marking on it of "064". Perhaps that would be useful in case anyone wants to try to order a replacement somehow.

If anyone does find an available replacement, please post the info for others to benefit from.

Dang. My PDA has the same backup battery issue.

According to the Waypoint manual, the backup battery is a 20 mA 1.2V NiMH battery.

This was posted at the mobile crossing forum:

The backup battery should allow you to remove the battery and replace it with another (something a bit less than 5 minutes). If you cannot remove the battery and put it back in without having the device reset please check the battery status of the back up battery Start > Settings > system > power. If it is fully charged then it is too weak to permit this function and the unit will need to be replaced. Call or email support for an RMA number. If it is not fully charged please allow about 24 hours to recharge this battery. It recharges from the main battery.

Hopefully someone can figure out the model number of the backup battery. Otherwise, I can live with it. I prefer to fix it myself than to exhange it for another unit with potentially other problems.

Ok, I disassembled my waypoint again and foundthe backup battery. Just like newfib said, it is in the smaller pcb. I also took the battery out and found it's model is:
VARTA V20HR. I have no luck locating seller this in the US. Anyone?

EDIT: found one HERE; And a cheaper one HERE

Sounds like we need one with solder tabs on it?

Somebody posted in this thread that he found it at a B&M Batteries Plus store for $3.99.

Here's an online place selling the V20HR with solder tabs for $5.99 delivered.

Just placed my order with MOUSER because of their price. I don't know if it comes with solder tabs or not. I sure hope so. Otherwise, I'll have to figure out how to put it back. Wire mayb?

hm close im really looking for a tool to clear the flash in teh unit so that a hard reset wont install all the extra junk that it does...ie waypoint software, ms reader...on my xv6700 i installed one of the kitchens and there was a rom wipe util in it.

The dumprom tool in xdadevelopers.com can dump xip.bin file (the latest waypoint ROM) to folds and files.
But I did not find any working ROM editing tools. If I can make the ROM pretty small to free up more memory, I will be satisfied with WM2003.

Did you Download the cwb1000 Dell_x5 drivers from here and install them from the PC before plugging in the card?

Here is my experience of replacing the backup battery so far.
I purchased from MOUSER and received the battery without solder tab. Since I don't have welder, I can't use it.
So I purchased again from Battery Specialists with solder tab. Soldered it and charged it until backup battery is 100%.
Then I took out the primary battery for 10 seconds and put it back. All of settings are gone and I have to go through the screen adjustment again. So I don't think this replacement works for me.
One thing I don't understand is that after I put the primary battery back, the backup battery is still 100%. So it seems that the backup battery DOES CHARGE, but it doesn't supply power when backup battery is missing. The manual says it should provide power for at least 5 minutes when there is no primary battery.
I feel bad for spending more than 10 dollars for the batteries and not making it work.

Thanks for the update h8py. I was afraid that it isn't just a bad battery. When I tested the one in mine for a surge current test, I got over a half amp, so the power was there. The juice must not be making it to the volatile memory, maybe just a bad solder joint on a component?

Has anyone managed to load Windows 5.0 or 6.0?

I bought the PDA only and would like to ditch the GPS software to give me more memory. Has anyone done this?
