osuuma said:I bought this GPS the last time it was $107. In comparison to the recent Navigon 2100T and Mio 220 deals, there is no comparison. An all-in-one unit like those will blow this away. The WayPoint is older technology, clunky, almost slipshod in its construction.

I tried to use the CF GPS included with my package on my laptop, with a CF adapter. Seems either there wasn't a good driver available from GlobalSat (yes the cf gps included with the waypoint package is a globalsat) or it didn't like vista. Who does?

Do you know the exact model of the globalsat cf gps?

osuuma said:The GPS software is very outdated, but pretty cool, as it auto zooms at turns. The text-to-speech file, available from WayPoint, works, but the voice is bad, (think Speak-and-Spell) and changes according to what is said. The word "recalculating" is female, "Left", "Right", etc is one male voice and the street names is another voice. Last night, the voice said "Turn onto unamed street" several times, which was odd because the software displayed the street name. So I guess there is a disconnect between the GPS software and the TTS.
From some review, the software looks like to be mapopolis, it there any help/about to show the software provider?

osuuma said:The car mount is a heavy, elaborate contraption. The design could have been better. I can't remember if the mount had an audio amplifier. Its at the office right now.
How about some green for my efforts?

Any picture of the car mount? or any similar pic can be seen online? Thanks.

You are right. But for that model I think biggest drawback is missed WIFI/Bluetooth. So I don't count it as PPC - it's more organizer, media player, eBook reader. And for $30 it's a steal. Not sure about $110 GPS version - I think it will be better to spend a little bit more and buy regular auto GPS + $30 PPC separately.

BTW, there are few applications which you can buy for $10-20 which allows you to backup full device snapshot (Sprite backup, spb backup, etc). In such case, you will be able to restore your device in minutes.

Thanks for the backup tip, that's good to know. Yeah, but you can add WIFI by using a CF WIFI card (I have a bunch of Sandisk 802.11B CF WIFI cards.)

Yes, you can use the CF card, I use one also in my older PPC.

Ah okay. Yeah I'm using one in a Dell Axim X5 right now as well, but it's only got a 300Mhz processor. The recommended config for the PPC Skype client is 400Mhz processor and I've also notice it has a hard time keeping up with Xvid/Divx playback, so I'm going to see if the Waypoint's 400Mhz processor does any better.

According to this thread, there will be no new map updates from Mobile Crossing - what's currently on their website is it.

Dale DePriest said:Currently our maps are $89 to upgrade the entire country. I understand that some are wishing for new updates but we are having some dificulty obtaining them. Our current source for these updates is Mapopolis and if you visit their site you will find that they are no longer in this business so we are searching for a new source. Please be patient as we are dilligently looking for a solution for our customers. We will keep you posted as soon as a solution is found.

It is looking like we will have to switch applications to get new maps I am afraid. This will require a ROM upgrade to support the new maps and a new user interface. We are try to focus on not losing functionality.

That was back in April & June 2007. Since Mobile Crossing is now going out of business, map updates probably won't happen. Looks like the only way to get new maps is to use a third party GPS software like PocketMap Navigator. At $90, it's no more expensive than what it would have cost if Mobile Crossing hadn't folded.

The current Mobile Crossing maps cost $15 to activate but they're a couple years old. The question is, are they too old or would that $15 be better invested in PocketMap Navigator?

This depends on how you are going to use it, and where you will use it. If using primarily for major highways and roads that haven't changed for years, then these older maps are probably sufficient. But if you desire information for newer developed areas, the newer maps may be necessary. The thing to consider is that a map release that is 2 years old really contains information that is probably 2 or more years old already (can't map the world instantaneously). For me, I would probably try out the "old" maps for the low cost and see how well they work. JMHO

The GlobalSat CF receiver is a BC-307. Here is its webpage.

Manufacturers web page for the Waypoint
Mouse over the text on the right to see the different accessories included with the complete package.

Mobile Crossing closing down, some resource links here.

The PDA is a FIC Cavalry 200 series, Introduced in 2003. Yikes!

i bought the waypoint 205 on woot last year for 199 with the car kit. The maps are fine for me in michigan, and i use this device daily. Its not without its quirks, but it was great for the price back then. I just picked up another WP200 from this deal, and will hang onto it so I can replace my 205 when it dies. The real kicker is that I ordered a new stylus 7 days ago and it came to 30 shipped!!! I just ordered a whole new WP200 for $38 shipped with the car dock. Sigh!

I ordered one and hope it will come.
From the review, the OS is CE2003, not even the second edition. This old OS seems not very stable.
Is it possible to make a "windows mobile 6 rom" for it? I remembered that Windows mobile 6 licence is free.
If we can have more information on its cpu(xscale 400M 260), mother board, memory control, we may find some similar devices which have WM6 ROMs. In this case, a WM6 ROM is possible and maybe not that hard to make.

Lets collect information on this and see if WM6 is possible.

Yes it is an older system but who cares??? If you are paying 30 bucks for a PDA that will run ppc software then you are getting an awesome deal. I would not get the GPS card unless it is SirfIII, which is much better than previous technology. Missing WiFi/BT does not make it disfunctional, there are many applications out there that just need a PPC. That is what I am getting them for, dont care about the wifi or bt.

The online store has a very responsive support line. Called them on various questions and they were very fast to pick up the phone, and seemed to have good answers. Doesn't make them a super company but it is impressive first impression.

I want to thank the OP for his post, going to help myself and others out a lot.

Small price increase... if anything like the 105 full unit, it may be last call.

alert mods

Half an hour ago they only had a couple dozen so I imagine they are running out anytime.

Looks like they bumped the price of the PDA by another $5. They're playing games....

I talked to one of the sales reps about the map activation. Apparently they're not set up to do map activations after the units are shipped out. Not sure why because Mobile Crossing could do it. Maybe someone else can call to get further clarification. Hope that helps some of you who are trying to decide whether or not to buy the maps.

It all depends on what you want it for. I picked up a "100" to give to a non tech savvy family member who wants a basic PDA and ebook reader. For $30 dollars how can you not?

alert mods

I dont know if I would say they are playing games. They are giving you one heck of a deal even at 40.

I just got email confirmation that 1 of the 3 that I ordered has shipped. To clarify, I ordered 2 of the $59 gps units and 1 $29 non-gps. The non-gps unit is what has shipped. Anyone get confirmation of shipment of the GPS units?

alert mods

Yup! Just now! Both $29 and $59 units shipped.

This deal made Xmas a lot easier.
