Our plumber said to go to a tankless water heater we would have to change out our pipes to 1" or 1 1/4" pipe. Does anyone have any insight on this? Thanks

Yes, I believe that's referring to the gas pipe. To get instantaneous hot water, a gas tankless water heater burns BTU's at a huge rate, much more than a gas tank heater which can take its own sweet time to heat the water. We had to increase the size of our gas line - it's not cheap, so we ended up locating the tankless outside near the gas meter to shorten the run, rather than running a new pipe 20 more feet to the crawlspace where the old tank heater used to be.

The spec sheet or installation sheet for a particular model will generally indicate how much flow is needed.

Great thread, though I admit to quickly reading it as "Wankless Tater Heater"

The Fed is different from the Feds (the Feds are the Federal Government).

Just being pedantic...

Along with jcantanixon, I when to a tankless heater so I would not run out of hot water. We moved into a new house with a huge Jacuzzi tub that my wife loved but it would use all the hot water. I have not noticed much of a savings on our gas bill but I never run out of hot water. I live in north Idaho and it gets very cold here and the heater works fine. The only problem I have had was once last winter the water supply line froze; luckily it did not crack the pipe. A little heat tape fixed that issue. Another cool thing, I had it installed on the wall in the garage where the old heater was and that freed up valuable space. My unit has a digital temperature setting and a external water outlet. I set the temp, hookup the hose and I have hot water comming out of the nozzle. It’s great for washing and cleaning outside.
It’s probably more economical to stay with a tank vs. tankless. But for me, when I added in the benefits I am very happy with the tankless.

...I don't think that would be enough to replace a regular hot water tank with... you'd probably have to watch running the dishwasher, clothes washer, showers, tubs, etc at the same time.

From what I've been told, most large homes need more than one of these. My plumbing contractor told me I'd be happiest with three--one for downstairs (laundry/dishwasher/sinks), one for the master bathroom and one for the other upstairs bath. Even though he could have made a lot more money, he advised me to just get the regular old tank and insulate it well with a jacket and insulated flooring. I've taken hour-long showers with laundry running, and that's "endless" hot water as far as I'm concerned.

I somehow missed this :: hope the IRS offers it again in 2008

tankless wtr htr uses alot of btu.. you will need to have the gas meter changed from a smaller to a larger meter to be able to supply the larger demand of gas. i work for utility company and the contractors have not mentioned this to the customers. when everything in the house is on- stove, wtr htr, htr/dryer, it causes the mtr to over work and may not supply enough for all appliances. fyi..
