Very tempting price. But I did some research and hacking on this thing is still limited:

- Video player chokes at full screen when scaling is used.
- BT cannot be used to access internet. (no DUN)
- No success report on replacing the navigation software.
- No success report on using SDIO WiFi card.

Can anyone point me to a firmware update? How about a way to install WM5 on this? I question if it has bluetooth or not. The description and GUI show "yes" but the solitary review says no.

There is a long discussion on this unit at gpspassion. They are favorable about it and the price has dropped in half since the first of November. It has way more features than anything else in this price range.

Maybe a dumb question, but I don't seem to be able to find an answer to it, and I'm new to PDA's. Can I buy a fresh copy of Windows Mobile 6 and put it on this unit? Is it like a laptop where a Windows XP machine simply "becomes" a Vista machine with the OS upgrade? I've seen WM6 and it seems nice.

Try finding a generic copy of WM6 first.

Ok, from reading the gpspassion thread, the only other GPS software you can load on it is the TomTom5, not the new version6, no one seems have any luck with other GPS software, not nearly as hackable as the Mios, big negative, since the routing of the unit is so crappy, since HP is unloading it, might not be any future update or support, the HP site does not have any software or driver update, just instructions. Despite all I said, still got 1 , got Amazon card for $30 off. I am sure someone will work out some hack soon, peace, happy new year to all. Thx OP

Found it, now may I have someones informed opinion?

I think you misunderstood. Where did you find a generic, as in platform independent, copy of of WM6?

Tomtom 6 Navigator does indeed work, just need to find an older version. 6.030 does not work, however reports are older versions of 6 works

Other navigation programs that were tested successfully are TomTom Navigator 5 (I had problems with version 6.030 but 6.010 is reported to work too) and OziExplorerCE.

There are firmware/software updates already. They only show (for now), after you register your 310 and download and run "content mgr." The update is from Dec 6th.
Like some others have mentioned, the rerouting problem that came in a magazine review as well as well as some individuals' reviews on some website is because the person hasn't checked on one of the settings of the 310. Their machine is probably set on the 'go back to the original route' setting, so they are getting the crazy reroutings.

I'm still testing the unit I got, so I don't want to come to any conclusions yet, but this is a nice machine. HP wanted to get it to markrt for the holiday season, but did a lousy job in the mktg channels, etc.

I want this as a GPS/PDA... I know it lacks wifi, but can you hack/customize/modify it to run PocketPC apps?

alert mods

If you read some of the post in the gpspassion forum you will see that it is currently running CE. You can even boot it up into CE using the CECMD.EXE.

customizing your HP 310

No one is able to upgrade it to WM6 yet and unless HP puts out a firmware upgrade it's really hard.
For now you can run CE apps on it.

Hope this helps.

Btw, I ordered one myself at this price. Just becuase I can run TCPMP.

also supports SDHC cards.

Expansion: SD, high-capacity, supports SDHC class 2, class 4, and class 6 memory cards

For those not very familar with this all-in-one GPS... HP kept the name iPAQ although this GPS doesn't run Windows Mobile. Example here

A couple people have written about how to get into the Windows CE shell example here. But like gchan216 says above... No one is able to upgrade it to WM6 yet

So it probably won't support the various DLL's necessary to run PocketPC programs and don't expect it to run Activesync to sync your PC/M$Office documents or outlook.

should be the micro SD/SDHC cards, not the regular size SD/SDHC cards?

it uses regular size sdhc. I know there were some sites that say micro, but I own it. It is regular.

so what's the consensus here? Is it worth getting/keeping?
Or too much of a hassle?

If its not a Garmin, its junk. Bottom line. w00t
