HP does have an update for it if you register the unit with them it is shown as a choice.

How so? It butchers the pronunciation and the speaker volume is too low?

The volume is low and the voice a little distored due to a poor quality speaker.

alert mods

if it plays mp3/video can't you route the output to your stereo?

Price is up to $399.

The Ipaq 310 does have an output jack for car stereo input or headphones. I put a 2 gig card in 310, but someone could put almost 2 thousand songs on a 4 gig or a long mpeg movie. I downloaded a short sample movie and played it and the picture and sound were great. I think all the minor bugs will be fixed with the first firmware updated HP releases soon. When I took it out last night on a test run, the GPS performed very well and the detail in the maps of the beach area I was visiting was impressive. Next time it lowers to $199, you guys who were on the fence should give it a try, it's pretty cool.

Hey Javawizard, change the TTS from the woman's voice to the man. It greatly improves the TTS quality and also change the Dynamic speaker settings, so it gets louder at slower speeds.

you are thinking small, man. 8gb sdhc is now affordable, and 16gb is dropping fast.
shouldn't it get louder when you go faster?

That makes sense.

Yes, it does get louder when you go faster. You can change the dynamic speaker setting to any speed, even over 100+ mph lol You can set it to get louder at 5 or 10 mph and then for top speeds.

I am very pleased with this GPS. I already have a Garmin i3 and Magellan 4100. iPaq 310 far outperforms in calculating alternate route if I take a different turn. Graphics are buttery flawless.

However, the GUI (interface) is not that intuitive and could be lot easier for use by say a regular non-tech person.

My 310 is not capturing the sat signal at all. I tried it at home and on the road but some how its trying and trying but not getting any signal. Anyone out there faced similar problem? everything else seems to be working fine, mp3, video, photo etc and, also I can create routes etc. The sat screen shows multiple red dots as well but the device seems to be not setting on one. I'm very disappointed, I called the tech support, and later applied the updates from their website as well but no avail . They suggest to return the item. Any help is appreciated.

Are you saying that your unit tracks the satellites and never establishes a fix? Sounds like you got a bad one. Mine acquires a signal very quickly, much quicker than my last unit (Mio 310x) which was no slouch.

alert mods

yes, exactly. It never establishes a fix on a particular sat. I dont understnd why. I have seen the sat screen showing from 4 red dots upto 8, which I think are the satelites its finding but its never fixing on one

alert mods

That's a bummer. Have you tried hitting the reset button or something? Did you call Tech support at 1 (800) HP invent? Mine grabs a satellite signal pretty quickly after turning it on. There must be a reason yours is not picking up a signal. Keep playing with it.

Infact I find iPaq 310 most esponsive / quick in picking up the signal - it's almost instant.... as searoute said, try resetting via the pin.

alert mods

I am still on fence on whether to return it or not, mine wont wake up after suspend without reset, from reading @gpspassion, people leave their unit as is without modding or adding program have fair the best; however some have report multiple reset and freeze for no reson ( I did), or no p/u of signal, the CPU is throttle down while charging; very, very negative since the battery life is 2-3 hours. Sounds like there is faulty hardware issue from bad design or lack of R&D on the road, not just software glitches, I have yet to try the dreaded content manager to update as some have reported to ruined the unit. When the unit is functional the GPS part is on the par with TomTom i had, MY advice for ppl waiting for the next price drop is wait for the major update from HP b4 buying this thing, save you some headache.

For ppl that got it for less than 2 bills (i got it for $170 after credit from Amazon card), its too tempting to keep it and hope HP will sort out the bugs b4 they work on an revision model. When all's well that 800x480screen along will make you forget the headache, till the next hiccups.

I agree. My Ipaq 310 picks up a signal very quickly and even faster than my Garmin's or Magellan. I feel bad for the guys who are having problems and I suggest calling HP support at (800)HP INVENT. If you can't solve the problem, then contact Amazon, tell them you got a defective unit and request a replacement. Shipping will be free both ways. The only problem I had is I changed the TTS voice to a man and it improved the speech greatly. Another benefit is having one less woman telling me what to do LOL. So, call HP, because someone in India is waiting for your call. These are really good GPS and I've used it daily for a week now and it works great. See if you can get your unit to work and if not, replace it. When you get the 2nd unit and you don't like it, roll your money into another unit.

Anyone has figured out a way to make these ebook readers? I was hoping this to be my GPS in car, technical reference books library in pocket... or if anyone has figured out a way to add podcasts...

I also got the N800 for the same price ($200) and am trying to decide if I would want to keep both or return/sell one of these. I use the T-Mobile Wing for PIM/Phone and need bigger/portable screen to reach numerous technical reference books that I would want to have always with me.

Z.

just use this free website that can covert almost everything to MP3 or many other formats. Just upload the ebook, convert it to MP3 and then download it on a 2 GB SD card and plug it into the HP IPAQ 310. Here is the converting site: http://www.media-convert.com
