I am looking for these bulb boss looking devices, 2 for a dollar @ a dollar store 5 - 7 years ago see http://oikos.com/esb/35/smartlights.html they fit between the bulb and the socket, will turn off bulb in 30 minutes, will blink twice a minute before turning off. if you flicked the switch twice, it will stay on indefinitely cant find it anywhere - great savings when forgetting to turn off bulbs.. fat wallet folks any ideas... |

From Wikipedia:
Broken CFLs release mercury vapors, and require special handling to clean up. The EPA warns against vacuuming, suggesting instead that you vacate the room and open windows for fifteen minutes to allow any mercury vapor to air out, then clean up the breakage while wearing protective gloves, and use double plastic bags for all broken pieces. They suggest using duct tape to pick up small pieces.
FYI: By 2014 CFLs will be required by law to replace incandescent bulbs. Now, how healthy will that be? I recommend not breaking them then

Which states are you guys in ? In NJ they are never on such fabulous sales... .98 is the best I have heard Yes, there is always someone from California or other "subsidized" states (by utility companies) that jump in and state how expensive something like this is, without taking the time to think that this is a great deal out the door for 95% of the states. Maybe I should remind them that while my bulbs in Kentucky generally cost alot more, that my electricity costs alot less. That makes it more than even, right? Oh, and the best price I've seen in Kentucky on this brand was the two 4 packs that were free after rebate at the end of 2006. Otherwise, this is the best I've seen yet. |

For those in So. Cal., I saw a free standing display of mini-spiral CFL 4-pack's at Ralphs, 10 for $10. |

Anyone know some good dimmable CFLs? Most of my fixtures use dimmers and they see a lot of use. |

Prices vary depending on the local power company. They subsidize the bulbs. |

roveldude said:kimgkimg said:I have a bunch of CFL floods by FEIT that take like 2 minutes to "warm up" before they provide full brightness. I have these same floods in my kitchen. They're nice in the morning when you're making coffee half-asleep, but go full flamethrower after a minute or so. But I like 15w vs. 65w R30. I tried fluorescent globes in the bath, but the warmup time killed the deal there. I have been using CFL floods for several years. I wondered if they really last longer than standard bulbs, because they seemed to be burning out sooner than promised. I started writing the install date on the base. The most recent one burned out at about 16 months, with about 4 hours use a day. I think the upside down base has a shorter life than upright bulbs. Even so, there is a significant energy cost savings, but I don't expect 7 or 9 years of life. That is ridiculous. 2 to 4 is more realistic. Warmup is much worse in colder weather, and CFLs can interfere with some radio control devices: I tried one in my garage door opener, which would not work with a CFL in it. Perhaps they will be better, or LEDs will have a better track record in special environments. I wonder what are we going to put into the freezers and ovens when they ban the incandescents? How about the special halogen fixtures? |
