Toshiba laptop BB instore only $399.99 starts Sunday 2/3/08 Celeron 15.4 widescreen vista basic 120Gb hard drive DVD writer dual layer not online so no link SKU 8674614 model A205-S5800
I have one of these in Gateway that I like very much. Plan to use it today to pipe the Super Bowl.
Mine was at $300 a while back. This one has more HD capacity than mine and it has a burner mine lacks. Plus I guess Tosh is better than Gateway (not sure).
It's a mistake, and it's a big problem, necklacing these lappys by calling the processor a "Celeron". Don't these Intel idiots realize the negative connotation of the word "Celeron". They are marketing jackasses. This particular Celeron 540 runs great and will do most everything 'cept modern gaming. Like I said it will easily do TV. But they just keep right on calling it a Celeron. Well, I guess that helps to depress sales. Most people are too smart to buy a stinky Celeron. I almost was.
Seems like a pretty good deal to me. The processor is more than enough in a $400 laptop, HD is above average at that price, and the DVD burner is nice as well. More specs...HD is 5400RPM and it has 1Gb Ram.

anyone jumping on this deal? anything better out there w/ price comparable?
with so many deals with better processors for less than a hundred more, this is not that hot. but if you have to have it now and can barely scrap up the money I guess its OK
This laptop should be $50-$100 less to be considered a deal. There has been many T2310 laptops with similar configuration for $400, so Celeron (while perfectly usable in a lower end machine) should not be selling for this price.

it doesn't seem that bad. You have to get more memory for it though. That's probably about $475 after tax and memory.
I got one of the $350 Gateways a few months ago and it ran fine with enough RAM. That is until the nice burglar came and stole that and my XBOX & Wii, and took the laptop as well. But the great thing about the Gateway was the 14" screen. 5lbs. Plus you could put XP on it.
Tiger has a Lenovo for $599 after $150 rebate. That seems to be the best right now and I'm trying to talk myself into ordering one.
Too many again are poo pooing the Celeron for no reason at all. For most it is fine. Todays Celeron as I have preached before is not the Celeron of years ago that you are all thinking of.
just called my local BB to see if in stock, I'm jumping. This will be a perfect laptop for me. We already have a muscle desktop, so this will be a nice extra. Thanks op, GREEN for you!
Anyone know if the comcast signup coupon for $100 off will scan and work at BB? I still have a copy from the last set of laptop deals. There is no expiration on it.
What will slow you down on this laptop is Vista, ram and the hard drive. I don't think Vista should be put on laptops at all. Many times, it is not an option to install XP because many Toshiba laptops have hardware that does not support XP's drivers. For Vista, you would be 1G, XP 512m ram. The hard drive is decent at 5400rpm but is always the slowest component in a computer/laptop. There is also software issues that slow down computer even more. Most people are disgusted with their computer because its too "slow". Do a clean install of XP and see how all of a sudden it becomes "fast". Did the computer become faster? The software did. Take care of viruses and spyware, defrag, also check your msconfig startup files.
So what I'm saying is that you have a whole lot of hardware and software to hate before you get to your processor.

The pricing of the end product is done by the retailer. Not Intel.
But my guess is the retailers want the Celeron so they can nonsensically dun it to upgrade the buyer to a hugher end machine. Ever hear these boobs dun the Celeron in the store?
yankeecouponahh said: bit on the deal and picked up 2 sticks of ram on sale for $29.99 each to bring laptop up to 3gb unit. Good deal. The laptop comes with 512mb of ram, how did you pump it to 3gb unit with 2 sticks of $29.99 ram?
I love how everyone is so quick to slam on here when someone is just trying to help out. Op tried to help by posting a good deal, people slammed it. I luv'd the deal, works great for me. This laptop comes w/ 1gb. I'm certainly not tech savvy, but when I went to BB today, the lady helping me suggested because vista runs on 1gb, that upgradin would be a good idea. So, since hubby does tech support, called him, and he said grab it. So, that's what I did and she said that we could upgrad and put 2 sticks in. Just trying to share the info that I have, isn't that what this forum is for? Didn't realize it meant taking out the 2 512's to put in the two 1gb's to make it a 2gb system, but that's what we did. Geez, my mistake. No need to slam on people for trying to help
I am looking for a laptop, I am not sure I'd get this because I want to run some processor heavy application. But this is a decent deal for someone who don't do anything much other than wordprocessing or just surf the web.
it wasn't the banter I was referring to hun, I know that, it was more of the redding of the posts. It just amazes me how people red the posts for nothing, lol.

Actually, the standard arrangement is to put in 2X1GB sticks and 2X512MB sticks to make 3GB. Generally you want to use matched pairs or suffer performance/compatibility problems.

yeah but usually these laptops only have space fr 2 sticks of ram. so how can it be 2x1gb and 2x512gb? 3gb seems really really stupid like 768 mb of ram used to be back in day!

It's 2gb and 1gb. With 32 bit OS not being able to see more than about 3.5 gig, and with bloated pig like Vista needing all the memory one can throw at it, 3gb makes perfect sense. You get about as much memory as you can get without wasting any, and all you lose is dual-channel, benefits of which are negligible in any real usage.
I noticed it doesn't have a built in memory card reader so the only sneakernet type data transfer would have to be by USB thumb drive, or buying an external card reader. It does have the Express card slot. Personally, I'm not sure how widespread those are yet since they only came out about a year ago.
