i want to buy a few more of these older iphones before it's too late.

A new 3g iphone may cost $500 or $600+ without a contract.

I'm not sure if you should. Just give time and I'm sure you'll find unlocked iPhone 3G on eBay very soon. Trust me, it'll happen one way or another.

Wow, so, the price here is very attractive unless they change the early termination fee on the iPhone.

8GB = 199 + $36 activation fee + early termination fee of 175 + 1 month of air time + tax = ~$500

I just recently purchased a refurbished iPhone the last time AT&T was selling them online. I ended up unlocking it since I didn't want to deal with extending my contract which is due to end in October. Anyhow, I'm planning to purchase the new iPhone 3G, but I've read that it'd be $399 for the 8gb for customers who are not upgrade eligible. I also saw that previous iPhone customers will be able to get the new iPhone for the $199 price. Would I get the new $199 price just by bringing in my current iPhone or do I need to restore it, agree to a new contract through iTunes, and then go into the store to purchase the new phone?

I think you might need to have the iPhone plan now in order to get the $199 price but you can check it online if you're qualified for the upgrade.

What will I pay for iPhone 3G?

If you are upgrade eligible and your account is in good standing, you will pay $199 for 8GB (black) and $299 for 16GB (black or white). Two-year contract required.

You have the option to purchase an early upgrade priced at $399 for 8GB (black) or $499 for 16GB (black or white). Two-year contract required.

Coming soon, AT&T will offer a no-commitment option of $599 for 8GB and $699 for 16GB.
