Thank for the Amazon reviews...would not have thought to look there (and I shop at Amazon weekly!). Good...looks like you have 3 buyers...I'm still mulling over the 'smell' issue.

I am not trying to trash your thread, and I do compost outdoors.

I am curious why their site and video talk about greenhouse gases being saved from landfills. Whether you compost at home or compost at the landfill, which is what happens, even if it is not being used as such, a given amount of raw material should release the same amount of greenhouse gases.

Am I missing the boat on this? I believe in composting, I just don't get why it would yield less greenhouse gas, when done at home, indoors or out.

It seems that the smell issue is due to the improper balance of green to brown. I think there was too much green.. hence leading to the odor.

$6 for 10lbs of sawdust pellets???????????? Try $3 for 40lbs at the hardware store, no shipping charges either!, I've decided to delete the 'idiot comment...most people don't know it is cheap at the hardware store I hope I have informed people

They have a composter at Costco for under $100 that is 10 times the size

It is more environmentally friendly to use a food disposal unit in the sink and have it get into the waste stream where it will be composted in bulk but in a water based treatment plant which is far more efficient. Besides put all your stuff in this thing and it fills up like crazy, this is a high priced feel good gimmick...people who buy this probably buy 'Airborne' too! Where is your true fatwallet spirit???

I do agree with your post, this thing is pretty expensive and you are correct regarding the sawdust pellets. You can get the sawdust pellets cheaper at a hardware store.

However, I do disagree with a few points especially the one for using the garbage disposal for food products. For example, lets say some eats half a salad and wants to throw away the other half. Chances are the other half is going into the trash. Or if you eat a banana.. do you throw the peel away or stick it in the disposal. I am sure that most people throw it in the trash. Further, do you run your disposal with the water on or water off. I am sure you are running clean water down the train so... the disposal can work more efficiently. Thats a waste of water.

Another point that you are not see is that we get compost after this process is done. I am not sure if you want sludge from the waste treatment plant for your garden... that is if they give it to you.

Finally... I do not compost.. honestly. i have no inclination of going outside to turn a compost pile... this makes it worth it for me... and fun as well.

I welcome truemagellan's comment...except for the 'people are idiots' part.
Agreed, cheap wood pellets at local hardware store works with me. I don't need brand name Naturemill pellets. I have to ck out costco's 10x larger version. I've leisurely shopped around for over a year on a composter on various websites and they all run around $150-$350 range. Just a little less expensive than this Naturemill composter.

Currently I do not compost but would love to learn. It's a daunting project to get started... to begin piling leaves, cut grass, food trash, etc in your backyard and have it attract flies/insects and stink up the whole neighborhood. Composting is book-learned for me so far and although I know people who keep a pile in their back yard, I have not been able to practice it myself. And the cold, freezing winter, what to do with the compost pile?? I don't know. And now, here comes this naturemill composter... have not tried it yet but dying to learn.

Finally I don't even know what an "Airborne" is...don't even want to google it in fear of turning into one of those people that buy it! And here in NY most people don't have food disposal units in their sink. We just flush it straight down as long as it clears!!

I am really enjoying this discussion, this composter is too much $$ for my FW blood, but I am planning on building my own this spring and need to learn more as well.

Here is some other good info on composting

P.S. not to get off topic but I agree that Airborne is nothing but marketing.

Ok this is not on topic, but relates to the "build it yourself" composter.
Here is a cheap alternative at W@l-M@rt Quick Clip Composter 120 gallons

$58.XX + tax
Cheap, probably has an aroma to it...
No written reviews.

Looks pretty easy for home brewed DIY construction, but this may actually last longer reading the specs.

Yup, this will work.

PM means private message. If you look on the leftside underneath a person name there is a button for private message. Essential it sends me a message without having to put your whole name in the thread for privacy reasons.

As for the $50. I will email them shortley, they will refund $50 back to your credit card.

While Im not able to participate in this deal at this time, I really appreciate the time and effort you're going through to make this happen, fatlard.

Okay. Initial Review.

I got the composter yesterday and I am so far thrilled. Upon opening the box... the unit seems kinda light and fragile... seems like it is styrofoam.. but I think it will be durable enough since Naturemill says it is weather proof.

The air pump is a little loud but should break in and make it quieter. The rotator makes a thunk noise when mixing but quieted down after I added more materials in the unit.

I added dirt, moss, flour and coffee grounds yesterday.... as of today.. it seems to be dissolving nicely. It is warming up to a point where there is condensation on the top of the unit.

oh.. i see steam rising when it mixes!

I will have pictures posted here later tonight.

anyone else have thoughts about how their is working?

alert mods

I just got mine today! Yeah. It looks like black styrofoam and is pretty big. Did you get the
coupons with yours for referring a friend?

alert mods

Yes. I did. Too bad it won't stack with the freeship code.

It would be $264 instead of $249.
