its kind of funny but I just built one out of materials in my backyard yesterday These other types of units would be nice but I guess I am not as serious gardeners as others. i will be satisfied with what we get out of mine. yeah, i have to go and mix the mulch but that's fine. its not like i am busy every single minute after I come home |

Longhorny- Pictures or it didn't happen How dare you have free time... Lazy I'd be interested in this, but it looks like an overpriced plastic garbage can to me. I usually just throw scraps in the yard and then neighbor dogs end up eating everything. Then sometimes they leave a deposit in my yard. |

Okay. A few more thoughts with the Naturemill. Make sure you transfer when the unit is 2/3 full. If you wait too long then the extra compost can push the lid up when it is mixing and that can release odors. Transferring can be delayed up by 48 hrs. So if you are more than 2/3 full try to transfer right away. |

I am trying to understand exactly what the Pro will provide in real-world use. As far as I can tell, they are the same capacity. The non-Pro is supposedly built pretty rugged (according to their webpage), so it's just not clear to me why the Pro would be worth the extra money. I can't find any phone numbers on the NatureMill webpage. I sent them an email two weeks ago asking if I could talk to someone about the differences between the two, and I have received no response. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? We used to dump table scraps in a pile in the back of our property for a couple years right now. It still just looks like a pile of scraps, since we don't walk out there and rotate it. This unit will be nice because it will be a no-brainer way for my wife to make compost for her vegetable garden. - Chris |

Hi chrispitude, Here is the phone number 800-613-6629 The added benefits of PRO # Stainless steel internal components for continuous heavy duty use # Ideal for large families, gourmet cooks, offices, or small restaurants # Foot pedal for convenient hands-free operation # Vacation mode included - automatically activates after a period of inactivity to conserve energy, and optimize heat and mixing for curing # Security locking feature for public areas such as offices or restaurants (padlock not included) # Spare carbon filter included for years of hassle-free operation # Available in designer colors # 3 year warranty INSTEAD OF 1 YEAR
Personally, I would have bought the PRO if it had features that need. I really did not care for the color since it since compost is black anyways. I am keeping it inside so the security lock was not necessary. The foot pedal was another piece to clean or break I decided against that. Vacation mode is interesting but that would mean I have to go on vacation.
That being said.. I do like the 3 year warranty. Since it is an significant investment I like to know that it won't break after 1 years. BTW. please turn on your PM feature. |

If you're turned off by the price, contact your county extension office for composting containers. Sometimes they give them away free. My black one can hold about 30 gallons and has a door on one end large enough for a shovel to scoop compost. There are slits for air vents and a cover. Downsides? Less convenient, must manually churn, and takes longer to compost (1-2 months). Advantages? Huge! Free! |

Got in on the group order deal. Been using the unit for about 1+ week now. I've noticed that most of my stuff that I put in the mixing chamber falls out to the bottom curing tray after a day or so. Is this normal? I thought the stuff is supposed to stay up in the mixing chamber until full and it is ready? The stuff that falls down to the curing tray seems to be well composted and dark though (after 1 day!). I understand some "leakages" will occur, but 80%-90%? Has anybody experience similar situations? I emailed the company to see whether I have a defective unit or not. |

fatlard said:thetwins said:Thanks, op...I'd be interested....I don't think I have 120 lbs of food scraps/ month, though. Does this also take egg shells, paper, and chicken bones? Just checking...don't want to assume, esp. with this much of an investment.
Yes it will take egg shells, shredded paper. However, it will not take chicken bones. From the reading I've done, you don't want to put meat and bones into compost. It attracts the wrong kind of bacteria and organisms, and of course rotting meat = teh stinkiness. |

Do you think the bar is rotating the wrong way and moving the base upward and dropping the contents? I sugguest giving Naturemill a call and asking them about it. |

Actually I put meat in mine already. Seems to decompose fine. The meat just needs to be in small pieces so it does not jam the machine. |

I sugguest giving Naturemill a call and asking them about it. I thought it was strange too. I saw the pictures that you have posted on your mixing chamber and mine was not like that at all. Anyway, when I get a response from Naturemill, I'll pass it along to this forum. |

BTW. please turn on your PM feature. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I was confused by the "ideal for businesses" etc. since the capacities are supposedly the same. The automatic vacation mode does sound neat, but I'm not sure it's $100 worth of neat. I've turned on my PMs, thanks. - Chris |

I placed the Naturemill Plus on a Kill-A-Watt unit to see the exact energy consumption. The unit when heating and pumping air uses 17 watts. The unit when mixing uses between 4 watts. With that and using the electricity rate at my area and the calculator below.. it will cost about $0.03 a day. .. or $.089 per month (not counting transmission and other cost) http://www.super-grow.biz/Electricity.jsp on a side note.. if you overfill your composter it will push the lid up.. i find that putting some weights will keep the lid down and prevent the smells from escaping....
