I may have found a possible problem with this computer as a gaming rig. I've determined that the MCH (northbrigde) of this Dell does not get enough voltage to provide for an 8800gt OC'ed. Now, of course, people would say, hey, you're OC'ing a card, that's your fault. And I respect that point of view. But a lot of companies produce 8800gt's that come OC'ed from the factory. XFX, Asus, and EVGA, which is the card I have. I have a EVGA 8800GTOC OC'ed to 650 as it was set at the facory. And it wouldn't supprise me if a good percentage of Fatwalleters were buying this PC to put a sweet 8800GT into this rig. I've found that it causes Vista to become unstable when exiting certain games. The most specific is Valve Software Games. TF2, CSS, Portal, HL2.2. Vista crashes on exit. I've also had it crash on Exit from WoW twice in the month I've had this PC. I don't know, but I'm guessing the MCh is set at 1.25. I believe it has to be set at 1.44, but since that's not an option to change in the bios, I'm stuck. I'm gonna try to contact teh manufacturer of the board tomorrow. So, if you get this inspirion or one in the future, I recommend against getting any video card from the manufacturer that it OC'ed. If you do, vista will run fine, but there may be some instability in gaming. I'll post again if I find any more info. Here's a youtube video of the type of glitch you might encounter. And there may be others I've yet to figure out. I've had a mysterious couple of bugs that I assumed at the time were Vista's fault. But they all could have been caused by this exact same problem. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wzjn-JuZ-cY |
