This week, 5/4/08 - 5/10/08, Microsoft Fingerprint Reader is on sale at Office Depot for $9.99. There are no rebates or coupons. Circuit City sells it for $49.99.
With price matching it's down to $5.99 + tax. Don't forget the Cash Back to save even more.

Please note that the reader, not surprisingly, is very Microsoft software specific and only works with 32-bit Windows.

Mini FAQ for some repeatedly asked questions.

1. Does it work with an OS other than Windows XP or Vista 32-bit?
Not according to the system requirements listed by Microsoft.
While the 32-bit limitation is only shown for Vista, there is no link to download 64-bit version for XP either. For further discussion of Vista 64-bit support see this forum.

2. Does it work with Mac OS, Linux, etc?
See # 1.

3. Does it to work with Firefox?
You may want to give this extension a shot. I haven't tried it so I can't vouch for it.

4. Circuit City does not want to price match.
CC price match policy is clear. If you have a local Office Depot store that has the item in stock, I see no reason how CC could deny the price match. If you can, get the OD flyer to avoid the argument that the web site print out is for online only, since CC does not match Internet prices.
If the CC staff refuses to honor the policy you decide how much aggravation you are willing to accept.
You can ask for a manager and if he/she refuses to honor the policy try calling the corporate on the spot or ask him/her to put down in writing why they think the price match policy does not apply to them.

5. This thing doesn't support my OS, my applications, and on top of it CC is giving me a hard time with price match! This deal sucks!.
I posted the deal thinking that this is a neat $6 gadget for majority of the systems there. It could even make a great Mother Day's gift. It's not worth suffering over it. Spend a few minutes at a CC or spend $4 more and get if from OD. In the end, if you don't like it just return it.

I am sorry if this is a dumb question, but how did get the 5.99 @ Circuit City? if they match the price down, aren't they going to sell it to you at the same price as the other store ( OfficeDepot ) $ 9.99?

Less 10% of the difference. The difference is $40, so 10% is $4 more off. $9.99-$4.00=$5.99.

That said, good luck getting them to honor it. We all know the managers make up their own rules.

True but there's no way around this one.

Unless you want to file a claim w/ the state AG then, no. They do make up their own rules on stuff like this.,

are we comparing this OD item with this CC item i cannot see that the part numbers are the same, they sure look different and that is often enough to invalidate the PM.

I got the deal yesterday without any problems. Just gave the OD flyer to the CC clerk and the system took care of it. I find CC to be one of the easiest places to get a price match, though sometimes they "forget" to apply the 10% difference. A quick reminder takes care of that. I'd recommend getting a flyer from a local OD first as some managers may not be receptive to the web site print-out.

Great find OP, even at $10 a pop it's good deal.

Great deal OP. A used Microsoft one was selling for $10-11 + Shipping ($8) on eBay last week.

This product would really be awesome if there was really a fingerprint authentication method. As it stands now you still have to have a working password in the system and your fingerprint just maps to this password.

It would be much more useful and secure if your fingerprint actually was encrypted into a password hash of its own.

Gonna give one a shot....

I agree OD says the Manufacture part # is DG2-00002 while cc says its 805529812703

also the colors are different and in the past when there is a "ball buster" cashier, they've told me that it has to match colors too!

Just a complaint, MS seems hellbent on not ever releasing a 64bit driver for this thing.

I think b/c MS just put their name on a third party product (DIGIT-PERSONA?) and they don't release so MS stuck?

I think that's a screwup on CC's part. They also indicate that that number is the UPC, which is correct:

Just a note: I am 99% sure this thing does NOT work with Firefox. I had one a few years ago and it was terrible. I ended up taking it back. Although, I could be wrong, they might have done a driver update since then. But this is Microsoft, so I doubt they would make it compilable with Firefox's when they want you to stick with their browser, Internet Explorer.
