good deal compared to last black friday prices. it is worth noting this processor is not the newest technology, which is the intel core duo. this is just the dual core intel.

I would be all over this if it was a 14.1" screen!!!

Decent deal consider no rebates. I'd definitely rather have a more power efficient CPU rather than 3GB of Ram though. But good if you don't need something that'll be away from an outlet too often.

Great deal, OP!

Does anyone know where the webcam is on the laptop? I can't see it in the picture.

I don't think any previous Compaq laptop models ever came with a webcam.

I missed out on the deals for the Toshiba and the Compaq at best buy ($399 last 2 weeks) because they were "sold out." This guy seems a little more superior...should I go for this for the extra $100 bucks or wait for a better deal.

Ebates also has 6% off officemax.com transactions--you'll need to create an account. This means $30, and if you're lucky to add a $30 coupon--see my original post above--the final price will be around $465 (including tax).

Specs say it has 802.11 b/g compatibility. Anyone know what onboard chipset it uses for wireless?
Also, I saw no mention of a power adapter in the specs, only on the side bar for an extra $80. It does come with a standard power adapter, doesn't it?

See officemax's page: in "spec," near the "description" tab; it says: "Package Contents: Mobile Stereo Earbud Headphones (1 pair), HP Mobile Remote Control, Notebook Battery, Notebook Power Adapter."

Also, here: http://h10025.www1.HP.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01486761&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

I've never heard of a laptop/PC sold without power adapter.

Me and my friend got one from local store.

On the website's specs sheet, it says it has FALSEo Fingerprint system (and later noticed that there is also a FALSEo TV Turner. We were naive enough to think that this system comes with a fingerprint system, even though it was not important for us. Of course there is neither fingerprint system nor tv turner on this unit. It is funny that Officemax Customer Service claimed that it has a fingerprint system and referred us to either local store or Compaq. Compaq Customer Service informed us that they don't have a fingerprint system on this model (or any other Compaq Laptops).

Local store was kind enough to offer us to return laptops, even they were in open boxes. But we like them and will keep them.

I see the Acer is available again @ $429, but only with 1 GB memory. My intentions were to buy the Acer and replace the 1G (2X512MB) with 2G (2X1GB). That would add on another $50 easily and with tax would make my Acer total cost ~ $515.

Wonder if this is a better deal (w/6% ebates and maybe $30/200) since you get 3GB ram but the dual core Intel processor (different than the Acer).

It's a programming error on the page, FALSE=NONE. You ever heard of a FALSEo Tv Tuner?

Everyone is having deals on laptops right now. Does anyone have any coupon codes that could be used, I did a search and could not find any. If someone has a code that could be used at either Staples, Office Depot or Office Max please share them.

I don't mind sharing my Staples coupons (I usually do in the Staples coupon thread). You can't use it for laptops though. If I could, I would've used it already.

Actually all current Core 2 Duos, Pentium Dual cores, and Celerons are the exact same processor (Merom Core), just with varying degrees of L2 cache. For average use (surfing, email, light photo editing) the cache will make little noticeable difference -- the extra 1MB of cache translates to roughly the next speed bump in CPU speed (eg a 1.73GHz PDC ≈ 1.86GHz C2D).

This is a nice little CPU unless you are a power-user -- BurnInTest benchmark. I got my wife one of the recent $399 Compaqs with this CPU and it performed much better than I expected -- even with 1GM RAM and Vista.

It worth a warning to other prospective Compaq users... I took the laptop back to BB b/c Compaq's touchpads are horribly designed (you have to disable the trackpad when you're typing or else the cursor skips all over the place), but am looking for other notebooks with this CPU.

This laptop also claims to have lightscribe technology....but i did not see the lightscribe logo anywhere on the laptop.....does someone know whether this indeed is a light scribe compatible laptop? and if it is then which software do i use to lightscribe ???
