Newegg got a EVGA 256-P2-N751-TR GeForce 8600 GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 SLI Supported Video Card - Retail for $49.99 after $30 Mail in Rebate, and another 7 bucks off promo code EMCAJAHAF. Expires 8/13/2008. Very solid card for a great price imo - 2x DVI plus SVideo out, nice small touch is that the DVI to VGA coverters are included. I believe thats the best bang for driving 2 display setup under Vista and it doesnt require the additional power cable. How does this compare to a 7900GS/GT. I have a 7900GS that I have overclocked and opened pipelines (becuz it has the 7900GT chip), is this an upgrade? GPU Review shows some things better, some worse...?

I wouldnt upgrade from a 7900GT to a 8600GT.

Get a 8800GT/S or 4850.

Agreed, I definitely wouldnt upgrade from 7900 to 8600. That said, not everyone got the power hook up to drive the 8800... I had to put in a beefier PS when I went to 8800GTX.

I just got my first PC that has a PCI Express x16 1.1 slot. It has a pentium dual core E2180 2Ghz processor.

I got it with integrated graphics because I figure I'd have better choices for cards.

This card looks good. There's one right next to it that's a little different... EVGA 512M GeForce 8600 GT

The differences:

Costs $8.25 more for shipping. Promo code doesn't apply so +$15.25 for this one
Has twice the memory
Memory is GDDR2 instead of GDDR3
Memory runs at 800mhz instead of 1400mhz

My guess is that it performs slower than the card in this deal. Is 256M very limiting? People in the reviews are complaining about it.

Also, Newegg has NOTHING on the GeForce 7900 mentioned in this thread. What's up with that? Seems they have several versions but not that one. (only mentioned in their learning center)

In either case, I'm sure to outperform the integrated graphics. Any other recommendations?
