In the past, I had trouble with Dell OEM Seagate drives. Seagate would not do warranty work, telling me I had to go to Dell. Since I didn't have an actual Dell computer, just the OEM hard drive, I could not even get an RMA to return the drive. Maybe it is better now. This was a few years ago, I think about four.

I cannot complete checkout... My DPA and AMEX say "correct the errors highlighted" when nothing is highlighted, while for my mastercard I enter 7/2010 as expiration date and it tells me that the expiration date has passed...

Edit: It finally went through, after I deleted my stored address and retyped it. I think they added a new mandatory field ("company" - WHY???) in the address and the stored address was lacking it.

In terms of $/MB, this is absolutely unbeatable, even with the new drives coming out and prices going down. I've only ever seen one deal for a mainstream-size drive (so for 2008, 1 TB-250 GB) that had a lower $/MB.

Indeed, watch out for Dell OEM drives. If this is indeed Dell OEM (as opposed to, say, a Seagate retail package), it would be the same as a hard drive inside a Dell PC. Seagate sold them to Dell under the agreement so Dell provide all of the support. Seagate in turn will not support these drives. Take a drive that came with a Dell and enter the serial number into Seagate website and you will get answer you are looking for. Dell OEM isn't a typical OEM drive in that regard and should be avoided at all cost. It has a lower cost structure so if something goes wrong with it you are out of luck. Imaging trying to get warranty service from Dell 5 years from now if the drive fails. Seagate will just tell you to go pound sand.

Dell would be / is breaking the law advertising a 5 year warranty on it then?

According to SD, a lot of people have ordered thme, received confirmations of orders, and the appropriate charge of $109.99 + tax has been charged to their Credit Cards.

says here the warranty is issued to Dell and begins when Dell (the "OEM"?) recieves the drive.

"Is the Warranty Assignable? The limited warranty extends only to the OEM and may not be assigned or transferred without Seagate’s consent. The OEM must clearly state in its contracts or warranty statements for its end-users that any product warranty to its end-users is from OEM and not from Seagate."

I have a HP PC with seagate hdd in it. I checked on seagate's warranty checker and it says one would have to go back to "place of purchase" for warranty of this OEM drive. However, it is INTEGRATED into a system (HP PC). I think if you just purchase an OEM drive by itself as in an accessory, then it'll go through seagate. Afterall, that's what Dell is saying "Manufacturer Warranty"

I read "Manufacturer" as Seagate.

Hopefully it isn't as bad as four years ago, but I ended up eating the cost of my Seagate because neither Dell nor Seagate would warranty it. With Dell, I got stuck on the fact I didn't own a Dell computer, and thus could not start any RMA process. I got the runaround from mulitiple CSR and their online RMA process, which always came back to owning a Dell PC. Seagate flat out would not warranty it.

This was four years ago, which is ancient in computer time, but still, it is something to consider. Notice this is a "Dell part" not Seagate.
