Here is the rub though. Newegg and ZZF and others sell "OEM" Bulk drives and Seagate honors the warranty directly. I believe and could be wrong is that specifically applies if sold within a system bundle. Now if and how they are handled differently between Seagate and Dell I do not know. I guess I will not know for sure until I get one in my hand and do a warranty check. In my case with trying to buy 3 I will take the chance to save almost $100 over the lowest price I could elsewhere. Each person needs to decide for themselves if they are willing to chance it until we know for sure. Mark |

Wow! Grabbed one. If it shows it shows, if not they will only get cheaper as time goes on. |

Can you apply any Dell coupons here to sweeten the deal further? |

I purchased 4 bare Seagate 500gig OEM drives from Dell a month ago and they all show a 5yr warrenty when the I enter their S/N at Seagate. So I would imagine it's the same on these drives. |

dirkformica said:I tried the 4% Cash Back link on the Dell listing on the Fat Wallet main page and then searched for the Dell Part number and suddenly the $70 discount disappears.
After going through Fat Wallet for 4% Cash Back.
After going through thread link.
There's a slight difference in the two urls (2242&sku = 70 off, while 19&sku = nothing.) I'm tempted to try for it, even though I tend to be more of a WD guy. But this seems like a bait switch akin to the NewBiiz 4870 debacle. I wonder if this is targeted marketing at price watch sites like Fat Wallet, et al? 4% CashBack will not work for Dell EPP. Your first link goes to s=dhs, second s=epp. |

sumduude said:and nobody answers phones on the weekends at Seagate. Dell would be / is breaking the law advertising a 5 year warranty on it then? If you are fortunate enough in this case to live in Texas , print off the page with 5 years warranty and you are protected by the Deceptive Trade Practices Act. Easy since Dell is in Round Rock. |

SimMike said:GWBush said:Indeed, watch out for Dell OEM drives. If this is indeed Dell OEM (as opposed to, say, a Seagate retail package), it would be the same as a hard drive inside a Dell PC. Seagate sold them to Dell under the agreement so Dell provide all of the support. Seagate in turn will not support these drives. Take a drive that came with a Dell and enter the serial number into Seagate website and you will get answer you are looking for. Dell OEM isn't a typical OEM drive in that regard and should be avoided at all cost. It has a lower cost structure so if something goes wrong with it you are out of luck. Imaging trying to get warranty service from Dell 5 years from now if the drive fails. Seagate will just tell you to go pound sand. Hopefully it isn't as bad as four years ago, but I ended up eating the cost of my Seagate because neither Dell nor Seagate would warranty it. With Dell, I got stuck on the fact I didn't own a Dell computer, and thus could not start any RMA process. I got the runaround from mulitiple CSR and their online RMA process, which always came back to owning a Dell PC. Seagate flat out would not warranty it.
This was four years ago, which is ancient in computer time, but still, it is something to consider. Notice this is a "Dell part" not Seagate. Yes indeed. By the very definition an OEM designation on computer hardware and components has ALWAYS stood for hardware sold by the manufacturer to ANOTHER manufacturer at a discount with pricing that reflects NO direct manufacturer warranty or support for those components by the original manufacturer of those component(s) to the customers of the manufacturer who uses those manufacturer’s OEM component(s) in their product(s) . These Dell drives are NO different. IOW no Dell computer currently under warranty no warranty on these drives period. Actually since 6/2007 Dell will now only warrant Dell branded OEM components for 90 days or if purchased within 90 days after a new Dell system they will attach the remaining Dell system warranty to the additional Dell branded OEM hardware . Before 6/2007 Dell would warrant any Dell branded hardware for 1 year or the remainder of the Dell computer equipment it was installed in whichever was longer and regardless of when it was purchased during the covered Dell computer warranty. The confusion and misuse of the OEM designation first started when the popularity of DIY computer retailers like Newegg, ZFF, etc.. approached computer hardware manufacturers and cut special pricing deals with those manufacturers to sell bulked packed retail (NOT OEM) computer hardware at discount prices direct to consumers. This bulked packed hardware carries the same full manufacturer warranty as the manufacturers full retail boxed product. Now 10 years later we have a entire generation believes OEM just means no retail packaging |
