Featuring 1080i video output and an HDMI connection, the SHD7000 is designed to be compatible with the vast majority of HDTVs already in North American consumers' homes. With Ethernet connectivity to the network , the SHD7000 also allows users to access bonus features from movie studio web servers and unlock special prerecorded content on some HD DVD discs. Dolby TrueHD rounds out the high definition experience by presenting the HD DVD disc soundtrack as it was meant to be heard, virtually equal to the studio master.

In addition to its HD DVD playback capability, the SHD7000 will upconvert standard DVDs to near HD picture quality via its HDMI connection, allowing a consumer's existing library of DVDs to look better than ever. CD playback is also supported.

just ordered one for new samsung 720p plasma at fry's, yes i know that the hd-dvd is dead but i buy it for upconversion n this unit is superior built even though it takes forever to play

alert mods

I don't see the value in this. You'll spend money on this just for the upconverter and live with the long load time? I suppose...but scratching my head.

I got this exact deal for ~$85 way back before the format was dead. This is only a $20 savings over prior deals and now it's for a completely dead format. As an upconverting DVD player it's just ok. It looks nice, but the load times are pretty bad (not as bad as some standalone blu-ray, but still bad).

Great player but a couple of annoying things about it:

1. Powering on takes a very long time. During this time, you can't even eject/load a disc. Must wait for the power on/boot up procedures to complete.

2. Does not correctly detect film/video deinterlacing. Must set manually for some DVDs or else you will see jaggies.

But the picture quality is superb.

Does it play VCD's As mentioned ? and also is this player region free for playing DVD's.

Thanks

I got one before the BRay decision. I have gotten two firmware upgrade CD's from Toshiba. The last upgrade seemed to make it faster turning on. Great unit but not sure about the price for just and upverting DVD. If you get it be sure to subscribe to the firmware upgrade service for free.

Don't know about VCDs. It is not Region Free for DVDs by default, but I believe there is a way to make it Region Free.

You can find the HD-DVDs right next to the 8-tracks at your local Western Auto store.

No Western Autos here, but I have been finding them at Half Price Bookstores for 7.98 and up.

China has elected to make HD the standard for their country. Expect to see more of these HD players coming from different manufacturers licensing Toshiba tech.

I guess the dead can rise again!

CBHD is "backwards compatible" with HD, but not vice versa.
