Oops, sorry! I originally wrote $12.99 shipped, but then changed it to reflect the shipping cost. I guess I forgot to delete that word!

Avoid this. I bought it before. All the tools and the jumper cables are of very poor quality. I hope no one is ever in an emergency situation and all they have is this.

Anyone tempted to buy this please do yourself a favor and make your own emergency kit.

1) Watch the Sears ads and get yourself a QUALITY set of jumper cables when they go on sale. They are well worth it and you WILL use them or help someone else with them at some point. Guaranteed. Familiarize yourself with how to hook them up BEFORE you need them (if you screw it up, you can do major damage to yourself and your vehicle).

2) Put a pair of cheap gardening gloves or dishwashing gloves in your trunk for when you have to wrestle with a flat tire.

3) Get yourself a QUALITY digital tire gauge (you can get really good ones for around $10 on sale at Sears or elsewhere) and use it. It will pair for itself. Guaranteed.

4) I think the little tools in this kit are basically worthless.

pass, I will just call AAA....

For tire gauges, just make sure you can use it against the tire to get an accurate reading (the older ones I could never get right).

For jumper cables, make sure its 10 gauge or better (the smaller the number, the better). And a better one can handle more current and can jump a battery better than a thinner.

The jumper cable on sellout.woot is roughly around 20 gauge, based on my guessing. Very inadequate.

I've had excellent luck with Accutire brand tire gauges. They're not expensive, yet they're reliable and pretty rugged and easy to use once you get the hang of putting them on the valve stem straight. Check out this one. Sears has similar ones that go on sale from time to time for around $10 or so.

Booster cables: I'd get the 14 foot, 8 gauge cables on sale half price right now for $15, or else wait until the 18 foot, 6 gauge cables go on sale. I wouldn't get anything lighter than 8 gauge (the lower the gauge number, the heavier the cable) and I wouldn't get anything shorter than 14 feet.

IMO checking air pressure, checking vehicle oil level, changing a tire, and jump starting a car are important life skills that everyone should have. With the exception of the part of a tire change that involves yanking a tire out of the trunk, none of them are particularly difficult provided you can follow directions, and if you can have a decent grasp of all three, you will save yourself major agony (and money) at some point.

And a better one can handle more current and can jump a battery better than a thinner.10-gauge is pretty wimpy for jumper cable use as that would only be rated for 30 amps. Good enough to charge a dead battery from a running car, but not really good for using the running car's juice to start the dead car. I would consider 6 gauge a minimum size personally. 2- or 4-gauge if you want to show them off to real men. The jumper cable on sellout.woot is roughly around 20 gauge, based on my guessing. Very inadequate.I haven't seen them, but I would say surely they are not. The average indoor lamp has 18-gauge cord. The lightest duty jumper cables I have seen are 10-gauge, and I would guess these are 10-gauge. Something like this.

Also, check out the quality of the clamps on the end those jumper cables. Coppler clad thin steel clamps don't cut it! Get a set of cables with heavy, solid copper welding clamps on them. The springs need to be strong enough to get a good bite on the battery post.
Another vote here for 6 guage cable too.
The last thing you need when you encounter that emergency, is stuff that doesn't work!

I've found having a tire inflator in the trunk is pretty handy, it works off the cigarette lighter. I got one at Wally World for about $10. If there's a slower air leak, you can inflate the tire and this will get you to the nearest service place. Once the AAA guy was changing my tire, and didn't have any air. We ended up using my inflator. It's also good for beach toys.

BTW, does anyone use those portable battery chargers? The ones you fit in your glove box, and don't require a 2nd car. Just wondering about those.

BTW one huge advantage of long jumper cables is that you can do a "front to front" jump start with one car parked behind the other. Very useful on the (admittedly rare) occasion when you might need to do a jump on a freeway shoulder or if a car has a dead battery while it's nose-in in a parking space.
